Our Mission: Spread ideas, foster community and create impact

TED is on a mission to discover and spread ideas that spark imagination, embrace possibility and catalyze impact. Our organization is devoted to curiosity, reason, wonder and the pursuit of knowledge — without an agenda. We welcome people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world and connection with others, and we invite everyone to engage with ideas and activate them in your community. TED is owned by a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation. Our aim is to help create a future worth pursuing for all.

Job Description

TED hosts 4 - 6 events throughout the year, out of their New York office. Each event varies in duration from 2 - 5 days mostly occurring on weekdays, with very occasional occurrences on weekends.  We are looking to add to our roster of temporary support for these events. The hourly range for this role is between $30 - $40 / hour with some room for negotiation as a Program Lead.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as the Food & Beverage Lead for events in the TED World Theater. This role is focused on creating an exceptional catering experience. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing catering operations, fostering strong vendor relationships, and ensuring compliance with Food Safety guidelines. Be prepared for an all-hands-on-deck role, involving tasks such as cleaning up, washing dishes, loading, and unloading the dishwasher.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute catering plans with a clear understanding of catering contracts.
  • Differentiate between food service styles: passed, seated, buffet, etc.
  • Act as a key stakeholder in vendor relationships, ensuring seamless coordination for catering services.
  • Train staff on operating within the theatre space, emphasizing the importance of adhering to Food Safety guidelines.
  • Oversee the entire Food & Beverage program, including Front of House (FOH) attendee experience. Coordinate installations and ensure compliance with agreed-upon contracts.
  • Manage staff and crew meals on-site. This includes setting up, receiving food from catering, creating beverage stations, replenishing stock, and potentially plating and displaying meals.
  • Participate in a composting program and contribute to sustainability efforts, including the ability to change compost bins as needed.
Qualifications

  • Proven experience in catering, with a strong understanding of production/film-style food services.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Food Safety guidelines and the ability to train staff accordingly.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with the ability to adapt to changing event dynamics.
  • Comfortable with hands-on tasks, including dishwashing and event setup.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience handling events ranging from 25-130 attendees in a reception-style format.
