Weekend Desk Assistant (Part-time)

WLUK has an excellent opportunity for an early career journalist. The Weekend Desk Assistant is a part-time position that allows an opportunity to gain professional experience while still in college. This is a weekend day position in the WLUK Green Bay newsroom (16 hours/week). The successful candidate will post updates to our digital and social media platforms. The Weekend Desk Assistant also supports producers and reporters in making telephone calls and following up on newsroom needs. There is also an opportunity to expand skill sets by writing news copy and editing video. This is an entry level position - we offer paid training and a supportive work environment

Skills and Experience:

• Write and post content to station website and social media sites
• Work with weekday managers to organize material for weekends
• Listen to scanners and react to breaking news, make beat checks, monitor web sites and social media, react to developing news
• Listen for and respond to breaking news
• Assisting in the efficient operations of the assignment desk
• Answer telephones and assist other news team professionals

Requirements and Qualifications:

• Preference for students in a Journalism or Communications college curriculum
• Commitment to journalistic standards of ethics and accuracy
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Basic computer knowledge/word processing skills
• General knowledge and interest in local, national and world news
• Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
• Proficiency with Facebook, Twitter and emerging social media platforms
