Who we are and what we do:

The mission of the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) is to operate safe and secure prisons and provide effective community supervision in order to enhance public safety. The department manages and operates or oversees 14 state prisons housing approximately 21,000 offenders. In addition, the department supervises some 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community correction and operates six Day Reporting/Community Resource Centers across the state. The department is fully accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA).

How you make a difference in this role

The position is authorized by the Commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) to monitor contract compliance and may function at times as the approving authority for specific actions occurring at privately managed facilities. This position reports directly to and is under the supervision of the Director of Contract Monitoring of Privately Managed Facilities with Prison Operations.

While this position will be assigned to a facility in Hardeman County, Tennessee during normal business hours, the individual selected for this position may be required to work an irregular schedule and be available after regular working hours, on weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

The Correctional Contract Monitor is an employee of the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) stationed at each privately managed facility to monitor the compliance of the private contractor with the requirements of their State contract and TDOC policies. The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing consistent, on-site monitoring of compliance with contract provisions.
  • Reviewing institutional reports and processes to determine compliance.
  • Completing required monitoring instruments on a monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual basis.
  • Preparing reports related to facility compliance for review by the Director of Contract Monitoring of Privately Managed Facilities
  • Maintaining files related to monitoring activities.
  • May serve as the approving authority for certain actions related to the care and custody of offenders.
  • Any other duties as deemed appropriate by the appointing authority.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred from an accredited college or university and/or a minimum five (5) years of correctional experience preferred.
  • Proficiency and capability to make rational decisions, solve problems, multi-task and manage workload to meet specific timeframes and deadlines, and work efficiently.
  • A self-starter, requiring minimal guidance, motivated, organized, detail oriented, with strong leadership skills, resolve, self-confidence, originality, and drive.
  • Good communication and writing skills with the ability to appropriately correspond on a professional level with a variety of agencies and clients.
  • Be available for meetings, briefings, and consultations as requested.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
