Summary: Sets up and operates various metalworking machine tools (ex. lathe, balance machine, mill). Maintains a high quality of service. Read mechanical drawings.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of the finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, balancer, and other machine tools.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
  • Inspect imperial and metric features.
  • Manual milling and general machining operations: drilling, milling, slotting, and boring to bearing fits with tolerances of +/- .002”
  • General manual and turning operation; boring, grooving, and threading with tolerances of +/-.0005”
  • Surface grinding: manual wet and dry, limited form, spin, and tolerances of +/-.0002”
  • Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, equipment, and unit tests to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Inspects, disassembles, selects parts from a repair parts list, and re-assembles rotating equipment. From the general description, sketches part or product to be fabricated.
  • Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Maintain the shop area in a safe, clean, and working order.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.


Must have experience operating Manual Machining equipment, including but not limited to the following:

  • Manual Lathes
  • Manual Mills
  • Manual Key Seater
  • Manual Boring Mill
  • Manual VTL (Vertical Turret Lathes)

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 1-2 years related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equipment Operated: Forklift, hoist, crane, sandblasting, lathe mills, band saw, drill press, balancer, paint booth, equipment vertical boring mill, horizontal boring mill, outside micrometers, inside micrometers, depth micrometers, dial calipers, dial bore, gauge dial indicators, thread gauges, vernier high gauge, power and hand tools, and other equipment deemed necessary to fulfill the functions of the job.
