Registered Nurse/Certified Lactation Consultant - Women and Children's Center

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse (Lactation Consultant, Counselor, Specialist) provides individualized, comprehensive care to breastfeeding mothers and babies, based on nursing process and professional guidelines for lactation consultants to meet the clients’ physical, psychological, social, and educational needs.  The LC provides the best possible preventive, supportive and rehabilitative care to breastfeeding dyads in accordance with policy and procedure.  The lactation consultant provides breastfeeding education to other members of the health care team and to expectant and new parents. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Skills Required:

1.    Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
2.    Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in New York.
3.    To practice as a Lactation Consultant, Lactation Counselor or Breastfeeding Specialist, additional education or experience beyond the basic nursing program, or both, as needed.  Educational preparation must be obtained formally through a nationally recognized certification program. 
4.    Minimum of one to two years current experience is necessary as a certified Lactation Consultant, Lactation Counselor, or Breastfeeding Specialist.  International Breastfeeding Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) will be considered first. 
5.    Continuing education to achieve BSN is highly recommended.
6.    Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical.
