Job Descriptions for Veterinary Assistants:

Veterinary Assistant (non registered)

This individual has the ability to perform all duties of an Animal Caretaker in addition to the following technical skills:

• Gentle animal restraint for fractious or aggressive dogs and cats
• Intravenous, intramuscular, and oral medication administration
• radiograph positioning and acquisition
• laboratory sample acquisition (blood, urine)
• IV Catheter placement
• anesthesia monitoring of healthy to moderately ill patients
• in-house and reference lab sample processing
• basic and advanced nursing care of hospitalized patients,
• triage of emergencies
• cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• urinary catheter placement
• nasoesophageal and esophageal tube feedings
• patient monitoring and set up of blood and plasma transfusions
• fluid administration

The Veterinary Assistant is also expected to feel comfortable communicating with clients, have a familiarity with commonly used surgical equipment, and be supportive in training their peers. A person wishing to apply for this position should possess a high school diploma or G.E.D., and a minimum 1 year of experience is desired.
