Overview

H&K Group, Inc. is seeking a General Labor Trainee to support the crew onsite for a project on I-78 in Lenhartsville, PA, as part of the PennDOT On-the-Job Training (OJT) Program. PennDOT has established the OJT Program pursuant to 23 USC 140(a), Code 23 of the Federal Regulations Part 230, Subpart A and Executive Order 11246. The OJT Program provides training opportunities for minority, women, and economically disadvantaged individuals to advance them toward journey-level status in highway construction trades. The General Labor Trainee will develop skills to fulfill the essential duties for general heavy & highway construction labor and may include skills specific to piping, paving, and surveying duties. The ideal candidate is energetic, detail oriented, and eager to learn and apply new skills.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs all work adhering to OSHA and H&K Safety policies.
  • Assist various site crews
  • Acquire tools needed for daily operations
  • Learn to:
    • Measure distances from grade stakes, drive stakes, and stretch tight lines
    • Bolt, nail, align, and block up under forms
    • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications
    • Level earth to fine grade specifications
    • Mix concrete
    • Smooth and finish freshly poured cement or concrete
    • Position, join, align, and seal pipe sections
    • Erect scaffolding, shoring, and braces
  • Learn additional specific survey, pipe, and paving crew duties
  • General road crew labor as needed
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

Required Skills, Education, and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as the GED) from an accredited educational institution
    • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to handle the technical elements of the job
  • Demonstrated aptitude for and interest in heavy & highway construction
  • Valid license (i.e., equipment operator, truck driver, or highway)
  • Not be accepted as a trainee in any classification in which they have successfully completed a training program leading toward journey level status, or in which such a person has been gainfully employed as a journey by virtue of informal on-the-job training
  • Not be an individual or apprentice who enrolled as “trainee” and quit three (3) times
