Position Summary
Spend your summer outdoors playing games as an Assistant Camp Counselor at Camp Wakonda, Keene Family YMCA's popular summer day camp program! In this seasonal role you will provide supervision for a group of children in grades 1-5, while ensuring a positive, nurturing, and inclusive experience for all. This is a full-time, seasonal position, running from June 17th-August 23rd.

Camp Wakonda is a traditional day camp that offers different, exciting themes each week. Campers will be engaged each day through active group games, STEM projects, creative arts, team building, water play and more. Camp programming is intentional in its effort to build self-esteem and positive relationships among campers. Our camp counselors are professional role models and bring each camp day to life with their supportive nature and enthusiasm.

Essential Functions of the Camp Counselor

  • Assists in leading energizing, fun, culturally aware and safe camp activities and field trips.
  • Provides direct supervision and instruction to camp participants in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Assists with planning and creating lesson plans.
  • Builds meaningful relationships with campers, families, and camp staff, while exemplifying the Y's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Upholds all YMCA policies, procedures, standards and abides by the code of conduct.
  • Projects a positive, enthusiastic, and professional image while on the job.




Requirements:


Qualifications:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • High School diploma or equivalent (if applicable)
  • Ability to perform duties with professionalism, enthusiasm, kindness, empathy, honesty, and respect
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic backgrounds
  • Desire to work with school-age children
  • Effective verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible and multi-task
  • Experience in one or more of the following is preferred: outdoor living/education, music, theatre arts, swim instruction or lifeguard certification, youth sports, physical education, or creative arts
  • Successful completion of CPR/First Aid/AED Certification and Child Abuse Prevention training prior to camp start date

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience working with youth
  • Behavioral management skills
  • Early Childhood Education credits
  • Degree in education, recreation, psychology, social work or equivalent
  • Certification, extensive training, or work experience in DEI
