Wage: $15.00 an hour

 

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Dean of Students, Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders offer one-on-one support to facilitate interactive study sessions to help identified students learn course concepts, prepare for exams, and learn effective study skills. This position is grant funded and continued employment is not guaranteed. The Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College (SCTC) will make continued employment decisions on a semester-by-semester basis and employment is contingent upon funding availability and administrative priority.  SCTC values a highly collegial and caring academic environment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Hold out-of-class interactive study sessions for assigned student.
  • Attend all class meetings, take notes, do homework, and complete all assigned class material.
  • Embed learning strategies to help students learn “how to learn” along with “what to learn.”
  • Help students refine study/learning skills such as note taking, test preparation, problem-solving, test-taking strategies, and more.
  • Function as part of a team emphasizing student performance.
  • Meet with professors to discuss lecture content, textbook readings, homework assignments, upcoming exams/quizzes, and proposed SI session activities/worksheets.
  • Provide feedback to professors on concepts that students who participate in SI sessions are having a difficult time understanding.
  • Maintain a log of student contacts.
  • Provide excellent customer and student service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer and student concerns and continually focus on customer and student services as our top priority.
  • Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and all other privacy regulations.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Contact with students to encourage each individual to perform at his/her highest level. 
  • Contact with Tribal College Administrative Staff and Tribal College Instructors.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of higher education.
  • Knowledge of techniques and practices in field of study.
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic knowledge of current technology applications for use in student interaction.
  • Skill in organization and time management.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize and express ideas, directions, and data in a logical sequence to describe a process or explain procedures.
  • Ability to present materials effectively to individual students or groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the community.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stands for period of time.
  • Sit, walk, bend, stoop, and squat.
  • Frequent use of hands wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Use hands for dexterity of motion, repetitive movement of both hands.
  • Have normal auditory, visual acuity, and verbal communication skills.

 

Work Environment:

  • In an academic institution environment, normal office and classroom environment with moderate noise level.
  • Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.

Job Requirements

  • At least 60 completed credits towards a College degree with an overall GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

 

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
