REPORTS TO:  FACILITIES MANAGER/ASSISTANT FACILITIES MANAGER               

GIVES DIRECTION TO:  POOL SUPERVISORS AND LIFEGUARDS 

 

NATURE OF WORK 

This is a seasonal position (approximately 40 hours per week) with supervisory functions responsible for the operation, care, and maintenance of Swim Center facilities. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  • Assist with interviewing and hiring lifeguard staff. 
  • Assist with leading annual pre-season orientation each May. 
  • Supervision of the daily operation of the Swim Center between Memorial Day and Labor Day. 
  • Supervision and safety training of part-time lifeguards.  
  • Conducts weekly in-service safety training for staff, documents attendance and training/skills reviewed. Ensures attendance and skill requirements are met. Assists in the implementation of the emergency action plans, and recommends improvements. 
  • Scheduling Lifeguards using SubitUp, posting daily shift rotations and work assignments. Handles requests for time off and ensures adequate coverage of the facility. 
  • Assists with startup and closing of the Swim Center. 
  • Assists in special event set-ups and operations. 
  • Performs daily water testing and ensures the proper operation of the pool’s filtration and chlorination systems. 
  • Conducts daily inspection of facilities and equipment. 
  • Inventories chemicals and supplies and requests ordering as needed. Confirms what is received matches the order and the delivery ticket. 
  • Ensures facility operates in accordance with recreation department requirements and Allegheny County Health Department regulations. Participates in annual inspection and assists with any defined corrective actions. 
  • Ensures facility is maintained in a clean and sanitary condition. 
  • Responsible for positive customer, peer, and subordinate relations. 
  • Maintains staff certification records. 
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed. 
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance. 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS 

Performs all other work assigned. 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS 

  • Knowledge of swimming pool operation and related equipment. 
  • Knowledge of water chemistry and pool filtration. 
  • Knowledge of basic tools. 
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals used in facilities. 
  • Interpersonal skills. 
  • First Aid/AED/CPR skills. 
  • Computer skills (Outlook, Subitup, Word, Peak SportsMan) 
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation. 
  • Strong supervisory, management, organizational and communication skills. 

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE 


  • High school diploma/G.E.D. 
  • Three years’ experience as a lifeguard. 
  • Two years supervisory experience in aquatic facilities. 
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification. 
  • Certified Pool Operator.  
  • Registered Allegheny County Bathing Place Manager. 
  • Pesticide Applicator license within 3 months of hiring. 
  • Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Hearing, seeing (close and distance), standing, sitting, climbing, bending, shouting, hand movements, holding, lifting (50+ lbs.) waving arms, running on deck and in water, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, grasping, and feeling. Ability to swim. 

 

Mental demands: Concentration on pool and deck areas. Decisions on proper rescue and treatment in emergency situations. Monitor and maintain pool water chemistry. 

 

Environmental demands: Ability to work in direct sunshine and wind. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including rain, heat, humidity and cold.
