GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Med/Surg-Orthopedics is responsible for the organization, management, and direction of the Med/Surg-Orthopedics Units nursing personnel at Harris Regional Hospital. The Director has 24 hour accountability.

 The Director assumes responsibility for the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of nursing care for the   units. Efforts are focused on providing appropriate structures to support safe care, quality improvement activities to ensure high quality care and continuous improvement processes to ensure cost containment/reduction, encouraging staff development and insuring that staff competence is maintained at an acceptable level.

The Director facilitates the effective utilization of resources (people, financial, material and equipment) to meet established goals and objectives of the organization.  Ensures effective recruitment, selection, development, and evaluation of staff to optimize achievement of goals and objectives.

The Director collaborates with physician leaders, Administration, peers and colleagues to plan, design, and implement customer-focused, coordinated delivery of critical care services and clinical programs.

The Director continually seeks, analyzes and enhances patient care and services to meet and exceed the needs and expectations of the customer.  In collaboration with Corporate Compliance, Risk Management and others deemed necessary, the Director investigates all incidents, accidents, complaints, and grievances. 

The Director will facilitate aligning the vision and goals of the department with the organization’s strategic initiatives. The Director leads the department in Performance Improvement activities and facilitates active participation of staff. He/she must supervise and render professional nursing care to patients in support of medical care in conformance with objectives and policies of the health system.   

The Director must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's / area's / department's policies and procedures.  


QUALIFICATIONS 
The following qualifications are the minimum requirements necessary to adequately perform this job.  However, an equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the necessary knowledge skills and abilities would be acceptable, subject to any legal and/or regulatory requirements.

Education:  A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is required, a Master’s Degree is preferred.

Licensure and Certification: 
Hold a current North Carolina R.N. license. 
BLS certification.  ACLS within 1 year of hire and maintain thereafter.
    
Experience:  At least five (5) years of hospital nursing with at least one (1) year in a leadership role is required. 
  Membership in the American Nurses Association, local and national level is desireable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds.
2. Ability to see colors, see at least 1 mm squares.
3. Ability to hear and distinguish heart, lung, and bowel sounds.
4. Ability to reach overhead.
5. Ability to remain calm, continue to function effectively and develop priorities during stressful situations.
6. Ability to communicate effectively using written and verbal media.
7. Ability to move and operate equipment and carry supplies.
8. Ability to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time.
