GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Operation of sonographic equipment, perform and communicate results of diagnostic examinations using sonography.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Greet patients and provides instructions on procedures.
  • Schedule and coordinate patient exams.
  • Exams include, but may not be limited to, abdominal, vascular, small parts, ob-gyn, vascular, infant head/hip/spine, and interventional procedures.
  • Use cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  • Use independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Examine sonographic images for technical quality and diagnostic acceptability.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing all breast imaging procedures, to include breast interventional procedures.
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment and work area, and maintains adequate supplies.
  • Provide care for the psychological and physical needs of patients and their families for ultrasound procedures.

The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the job position.

EDUCATION: High school diploma; graduation from a formal sonography program.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one or more years’ experience and/or training with graduate sonographer.

CERTIFICATIONS: ARDMS registered with certification in abdomen studies required. Vascular certification is preferred, but not required. Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty or specialties as appropriate. BLS

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in ultrasound procedures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Experience with the use, QA, and troubleshooting of various types of sonographic equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards related to radiology and sonography.
  • Experience with interventional procedures for the breast.
  • Ability to use computer and network systems for processing and submitting images for interpretation by radiologist.
  • Emergency response: knowledge of AED function, crash cart location and oxygen tank usage. Ability to respond to untoward medical event with calm demeanor and proficiency.

ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work in a cooperative nature within and outside department with staff, patients and families.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to explain procedures clearly and simply to patients.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Requires full body motion. Must be able to lift/carry/move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires positioning of patients. Requires 20/20 correctable vision.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Medical office, exam and treatment rooms. Exposure to radiation, needles, and communicable diseases and other conditions common to radiology setting. Work location may vary between sites.
