What Can You Expect

This position fits or lays pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. May perform any combination of the following tasks: grade trenches or culverts, position pipe, and seal joints.

What You Bring to the Table

• Align and position pipes
• Check slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers
• Connect pipe pieces and seal joints
• Cut pipes to required lengths
• Dig trenches to required depths by hand or using trenching tools
• Grade and level trench bases using tamping machines and hand tools
• Install and repair sanitary and stormwater sewer structures and pipe systems
• Layout pipe routes following written instructions or plans and coordinating layouts with Foreman
• Locate existing pipes needing repair or replacement
• Tap and drill holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices
• Install and use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels
• Signal Operator when setting
• Assist Labor Team
• Train others in pipe-laying and provide supervision to trainees

What You Should Know

• Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in the process of pipe laying for storm and sanitation sewers, drains and water mains
• Read and interpret plans
• Controlling operations of equipment or systems
• Must be able to determine the appropriate tool or equipment needed for each specific task
• Performing general physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials
• Controlling machines and processes by using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes
• Handling and moving objects by using hands and arms in the handling, installing, positioning and moving materials and manipulating things
• Getting information by observing, receiving and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources
• Must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat
• Must be trained in all required safety procedures with all associated certifications
