Position Summary:

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine seeks to a Human Services Program Support Tech to serve as a Peer Support Specialist. The Peer Support Specialist will meet identified patients with substance use disorders, provide a brief intervention and assist with their treatment. They will support Robeson County patients, especially those connected to the UNC ATLAS mobile clinic, Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), and to Breeches Buoy Addiction Medicine Service. The Peer Support Specialist will assess case management needs and assist as needed. The Peer Support Specialist utilizes their own experiences to offer individuals assistance in achieving stability and obtaining and maintaining the level of coping and basic life skills that is consistent with their treatment goals.
Responsibilities will include the following:
* Provide Screening and Brief Intervention to patients, including a Change Assessment and interest in treatment.
* Provide recovery and peer support services, offering resources and encouragement to engage in treatment.
* Assess the patient’s case management needs and provide resources as needed.
* Attend organizational meetings and contribute to planning and workflow revision.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Peer Support must be delivered by individuals in recovery who have experience living with an addictive disorder. Valid drivers license. North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialists and Peer Support Specialists in Training meet the following criteria:
(1) Self-identify as an individual with life experience of being diagnosed with a serious mental illness or addictive disorder which meets Federal Definitions, and
(2) Is well grounded and actively committed to their own recovery and
(3) Receive supervision by a Qualified Professional (QP), and
(4) Are not a family member of the individual who receives Peer Support services, and
(5) Current NC Peer Support Specialist certification.
