Position Description

At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Director to join the Data Center Power and Control Division Team in Reno, NV. Under general direction of the Vice President of Engineering, the Engineering Director directs and organizes the activities of the Mechanical & Electrical Engineering teams in the development of innovative, cost efficient power distribution and control products. The Director of Engineering plans and directs staff to ensure that all assigned duties are performed quickly, efficiently and according to established safety standards as well as departmental and company policies, procedures and goals. The Director of Engineering manages staff in areas such as work scheduling, communications, employee relations, performance counseling and performance reviews.

What Will You Do?
  • Coordinate Mechanical and Electrical Engineering teams in realizing new products from high level product architecture platform specifications along with the technology building blocks designed to support them.
  • Direct the engineering teams to design products that are cost efficient and manufacturable on a global scale using various contract manufacturers with an emphasis towards reduced touch assemblies and automation with minimized parts count.
  • Work with Product Management on developing custom product solutions that meet large volume customer requests, from existing platform architecture and subcomponents, that may require custom enclosure and repackaging of internal electrical and mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Assist Technical Support team in the diagnosis and root cause determination of product field failures. Work with the engineering teams in developing appropriate updates to products and necessary engineering change order(s) to correct any product deficiencies.
  • Utilize appropriate resources within the engineering teams to support the Sales team in identifying customer requirements and the appropriate application of our PDU technology in addressing their challenges.
  • Develop a lean organization with strong key people and a mindset of continuous improvement.
  • Initiate and foster a spirit of cooperation within and between departments.
  • Promote a safe, clean and organized work environment. Ensure engineering teams have proper equipment and software tools and training that allow them to work productively on complex electro-mechanical designs.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment on daily tasks that facilitate customer design requirements and business goals.
  • Maintain compliance with all ISO regulations and procedures.
  • Actively communicate business strategy and key results to engineering staff. Facilitate regular staff meetings to promote open and regular communication.
  • Participate in staff selection/interview process. Recruits, hires, train and evaluates staff.
  • Supervise and provide support and direction to staff. Resolve personnel issues and support team building with positive and open communication.
  • Display original thinking and creativity; Meet challenges with resourcefulness; Generate suggestions for improving work; Develop innovative approaches and ideas.
  • Display willingness to make decisions; Exhibit sound and accurate judgment; Support and explain reasoning for decisions; Include appropriate people in decision-making process (specifically Department Managers); Makes timely decisions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required Skills

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year College or University with emphasis in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years product design experience and a minimum of 3 years managing a work team.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
  • Technical knowledge for engineering design. Must be able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Strong leadership skills, with demonstrated ability to supervise and manage others.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, development and motivation to staff to achieve superior results and accomplish overall business objectives.
  • Excellent skills in project management, demonstrated ability to make timely and effective decision, handle multiple priorities and effectively delegate responsibilities to ensure product development projects are delivered on time and within budget. Able to manage, design and implement process and systems to maximize department or organization performance.
  • Must have solid business acumen and understanding of a variety of functional areas within the business.
  • Ability to apply cost/benefits analysis to requested projects.
  • Prior experience in managing a staff (supervise, train, coach, develop, motivate, interview, hire, terminate) and lead by example.
  • Computer proficient with knowledge of Engineering CAD software and Microsoft Office products Word/Excel/Outlook).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to provide information across multiple groups in the Company including Executive Management, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Sales.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and the ability to work independently.
  • This position requires minimal travel some of which may be international.
  • Familiarity of ISO 9000 standards and audit process.
