Job Summary

The Senior Manager Ground Support provides leadership and support to the Denver (DEN) Region Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Team and oversees Southwest's fleet. This role is responsible for leading a region of GSE Managers, Supervisors, and Mechanics supporting airports across multiple states while encouraging best practices in their region in the areas of maintenance, staffing, supply chain, scheduling, safety, and budget adherence. The Senior Manager Ground Support is a skilled communicator and strategic thinker, who looks forward to making a meaningful impact on the future of Southwest Airlines.

Responsibilities
  • Support GSE Managers with their daily operations to ensure effective management and teamwork in preventative maintenance programs, union relations, budgeting, and scheduling
  • Conduct frequent station visits to oversee local service levels, station partnerships, team morale, and personnel concerns
  • Ensure consistent, open communication with Ground Ops Leadership regarding new deliveries, vendor services, equipment requirements and failures, safety issues and other special projects. Respond to and resolve escalated issues as they arise
  • Advise on regional needs related to inclement weather, seasonal demands, emergency operations, or peak travel times to ensure minimal operational disruption
  • Advise GSE Managers or other key partners on special equipment projects, widespread issues or trends, facility modifications, or staffing needs across regions
  • Assist GSE Director in meeting annual budget goals by encouraging GSE Managers to innovate low-cost solutions and establish regular cost controls
  • Liaison with other departments in investigations, SRM, SRS, WORB, GORB, SEAT, environmental and innovation initiatives
  • May provide detailed fleet planning analysis and objectives and direct GSE refurbishment efforts
  • May oversee the work activities of GSE Engineers, Specialists, or Analysts in addition to Managers
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Expert knowledge of gas, diesel, electric, hydraulic and alternate fuel systems and parts
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining agreement processes and procedures
  • Skilled in OSHA, FAA, EPA rules and regulations, as well as general safety principals in the workplace
  • Possess coaching, motivation, listening, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to navigate and utilize computer programs and equipment diagnostic systems
  • Ability to analyze mechanical problems and advise on sound repair decisions
  • Ability to work successfully in high-pressure or emergency situations
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to build and/or interpret reports and analyze data
Education
  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in directly or indirectly leading team(s)
  • Fully functioning, broad knowledge in:
    • Heavy truck and/or equipment repair experience
    • Support Operations
    • Budgets and maintaining cost controls
  • Preferred: Previous experience working in a union environment
Licensing/Certification
  • Ability to obtain a SIDA badge and meet all local airport requirements
Physical Abilities
  • Ability to perform work duties from [limited space work station/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
  • Ability to move/transport 50 lbs on a regular basis (over 50%)
  • Ability to move in a prone position on or near the ground without standing
  • Ability to be or remain stationary in a forward and downward position
  • Ability to operate motorized vehicles/equipment
  • Ability to raise 50 lbs on a regular basis (over 50%)
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary upright position for over 50% of the time
  • Ability to traverse from one location to another
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in outdoor and inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with potential exposure to excessive noise, vibrations and/or sensory conditions
  • Ability to compose text
Other Qualifications
  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Air travel with frequent overnight stays required
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed

Pay & Benefits:

Competitive market salary from $144,200 per year to $160,200 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
