City Experiences is seeking a Deckhand for our HMS Ferries operation in Jacksonville, FL.

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody City Experiences' RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

The Deckhand monitors the river and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation as well as counts ferry riders, completes necessary paperwork and completes toll collections as required. This position also handles mooring lines to dock or undock the vessel and transit locks while performing custodial and maintenance tasks as directed, all while providing a high level of customer service to ferry riders.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Remain true to and champion the RESPECT Service System and Code of Conduct.
  • Safety First - Safety shall remain the highest priority at all times. Be an active advocate of, and participant in, the HMS Ferries Safety Culture.
  • Consider reliability and efficiency with regard to Company operations.
  • Monitor river, vessel, and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation.
  • Participate in onboard training and routine drills.
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment (i.e. fire extinguishers, life preservers, work vest).
  • Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Handle and dispose of all chemicals and other types of hazardous or caustic materials in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) (as required).
  • Report safety related concerns.
  • Assist in boarding and disembarking of passengers including maintenance of passenger counts, ticket sales, as well as respond to questions from the public.
  • Responsible for getting underway, mooring, anchoring, handling lines, ship's ramps, and shore side facilities in all weather conditions.
  • Block tires of vehicles as they embark the vessel as directed.
  • Perform lookout duties while underway - to include watching for other vessels, monitoring traffic conditions and potential unsafe conditions onboard and otherwise.
  • Perform assigned tasks within legal requirements of USCG and other regulatory agencies.
  • Collect tolls and sell ticket books, using credit card system at times.
  • Ensure ticket authenticity and maintain required documentation for tolls collected and tickets sold.
  • Guarantee cash authenticity by utilizing available means, i.e. fraud detection pen.
  • Assist with filling water, bunkering fuel, and shore power connect & disconnect, engine room repairs & maintenance as directed.
  • Perform cleaning tasks of the vessels & property as required.
  • Perform maintenance and construction tasks as required.
  • Assist with training of crew as necessary. +
  • Understand the Employee Handbook and adhere to policies.
  • Understand and comply with the Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Understand and comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain Crew Qualification binder.
  • Collaborate with other HMS Ferries personnel to remain attentive to regulatory requirements and alert to regulatory changes.
  • Assist Captain in ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations.
  • Assist Captain in ensuring vessel is in an inspection-ready condition at all times.
  • Present professional level of customer service and appearance to all clients, both internal and external.
  • Serve as Company representative to passengers aboard vessel while underway and ashore.
  • Responsible for handling money and balancing deposits/money bags; perform deposits within guidelines provided by Office Manager.
  • Report passenger count (vehicles and pedestrians) to the Captain upon departure.
  • Generate settlement and recap reports as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:
  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) - if applicable, and/or ability to obtain and maintain.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Copy of DD214, if Veteran status.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proven track record of working successfully in a team environment.
  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency and efficiency.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, quickly-changing environment.
  • Ability to process calculations frequently and continuously.
  • Must be detail-oriented and organized.
  • Must be willing to accept changes of direction in work and priorities with a positive attitude.
  • Must be a proactive thinker and constantly think ahead to better serve our customers, both internal and external.
  • Basic Computer skills; experience with MS Office preferred.
  • Minimum one year customer service experience.
  • Two to three years cashier/retail/accounting experience, preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Salary range: $15 - $16 / hour
