**This position can be performed remotely for candidates who reside in IA & MN.**
Serves as a critical member of the underwriting leadership team that will enhance our value proposition to major external and internal stakeholders and customers. Ensures underwriting programs are best in class, and that adequate insight into the data allows proper governance of new business written. Communicates critical and key project information to all internal and external stakeholders, as well as research and advocates for innovative and continuous improvements based on findings.
Essential Functions:
Works with internal and external stakeholders to drive growth initiatives and a competitive advantage through the risk selection process
Establishes a roadmap and leads complex projects (multi-phase, multi-system projects of significant financial impact and urgency), primarily focused on underwriting for EMCNL through to successful completion. Defines roles, responsibilities, and expectations clearly to ensure appropriate accountability
Leads project teams in the development and implementation of detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and cost-benefit analysis, while providing direction, communication, and status reporting
Monitors and coordinates the collection of information, inventory process, and analysis involved in underwriting related projects
Leads the data analysis and risk assessment program of business written
Drives innovation by researching and evaluating new data models and underwriting data sources
Partners with vendors, reinsurers and internal stakeholders to implement, monitor and continuously evaluate data models and rules, underwriting data sources and client interfaces, and adjusts as needed
Ensures that all compliance and regulatory concerns with data are addressed and handled appropriately
Works closely with Actuarial, Claims and data science partners (vendors, reinsurers) to evaluate underwriting outcomes and trends, including model decisions
Develops a roadmap to identify and implement underwriting and new business process efficiencies utilizing data and technology
Establishes a talent focused environment focused on high employee engagement and continuous learning to align with the innovative changes happening within the life insurance industry
Leads the development of data driven and AI assisted underwriting tools for use in underwriting and other client-centric solutions
Manages resources effectively across competing demands
Leads business transformation, underwriting modernizations and the competitive evaluation of external business market solutions and engages with existing and potential new business partners to drive business growth, internal process efficiency, and customer experience enhancements
Identifies opportunities, recommends improvements, and leads the implementation of new solutions
Actively monitors market developments and innovations related to new business acquisition and underwriting, and reports findings to leadership
Responsible for creating positive, proactive relationships with internal and external customers
Experience & Education:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance risk management, health related field or equivalent relevant experience
Ten years of progressively responsible roles in life underwriting, including experience in program development and oversight
Project management or related experience
Life insurance certifications, such as FLMI, FALU, PMP preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Ability to think strategically, articulate sound business decisions, challenge the status quo, drive change and communicate the vision to multiple stakeholders
Ability to clearly prioritize and lead multiple teams to execute on strategic priorities
Ability to work with vendors, distributors and reinsurers
Ability to collaborate to design and implement new business capabilities, on-time and within budget
Expert knowledge of life insurance underwriting
Excellent knowledge of data sources, data and predictive analytics, distribution partners and technology
Excellent knowledge of insurance products and practices with the ability to comprehend and react to regulatory changes
Excellent knowledge of computer and automated underwriting systems, programs, and research techniques
Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including ability to persuade and influence
