Position Location (City): Greenville Job Category: Non-Faculty Instructional & Research Organizational Unit Overview: The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences. Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. Job Duties: The Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement/Risk Management Program Director, under the direction of the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, will be responsible for design, implementation, and continued support of the Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement/Risk Management programs to ensure the highest quality, patient-centered care is provided in a safe and compassionate environment. Program Designs and Implementation: 50% • Continually assesses the full scope of all School of Dental Medicine services for Quality Assurance/ Improvement and Risk Reduction • Proactively manages ongoing, comprehensive quality assurance and improvement programs • Specifies data collection processes used to ensure quality performance and identify quality related problems • Develops ongoing improvement studies including measurable performance indicators to quantify process improvement activities • Expands processes, including pertinent data collection, to ensure desired results related to Quality Improvement activities, including annual program evaluation and provision of real-time, meaningful data • Assures the Risk Management program maintains focus on patient, provider, student and employee safety • Defines, classifies, and reviews all reportable adverse events and near misses • Investigates and trends incidents and accidents through data analysis to develop action plans to reduce harm and improve quality • Employs ongoing data analytics, comfortably performing root cause analyses to determine the reasons for problems, followed by proposals of solutions for improvement • Provides routine, periodic, and as-needed, status updates to the Dean's Executive Council on Quality and Risk Management activities, ongoing projects, planned initiatives, identified opportunities for improvement, and accomplishments • Proactively participates in Quality Assurance/Improvement, Risk Management, Safety, Peer Review meetings, and all other committees as appointed or required • Researches, develops, and manages a program directed toward identification and assistance with impaired health care professionals The Director will promote a culture of quality, safety, and customer satisfaction throughout the organization to include all administrators, providers, staff, students, and residents. Promotion of a Culture of Quality, Safety Risk Awareness and Customer Satisfaction: 25% • Helps deploy a non-punitive, non-retaliatory response to adverse and near miss events in support of an open, transparent, and just culture of quality and safety throughout the School of Dental Medicine • Collects, tracks, trends, distributes and communicates quality and risk management data across the organization • Implements activities and projects based on data collection, aggregation and analysis to improve dental services as well as risk mitigation to help grow a culture of quality and safety among all School participants • The Director will utilize and institutionalize nationally accepted best practices, essential to the position's effectiveness. Utilization of Nationally Accepted Best Practices: 25% • Collects and tracks data associated with quality, risk and compliance with associated practices • Establishes metrics to measure quality and risk practices and processes • Ensures data integrity of all information collected • Participates in organizational education and training related to best practices associated with clinical, quality and risk domains • Assists in providing oversight for infection prevention, peer review, external quality reporting, regulatory compliance, and ongoing survey readiness functions • Contributes to direct Peer Review activity and how it relates to Quality Assurance/ Improvement as well as • Credentialing and Privileging programs • Develops and integrates Quality Improvement, Risk Management and Peer Review processes, where applicable, to demonstrate interdependence and broad scope effects • Monitors all applicable Federal, State, and University guidelines, statutes, policies, and procedures related to healthcare quality to ensure compliance Position contingent upon available funding. Applicant must be authorized to work on a full-time basis in the US. Minimum Education/Experience: Master's degree required; or will accept in substitution a Bachelor's Degree in Health Care Administration, Public Health, or science related program and two years' experience in data, trend analysis and benchmarking in a medical related field. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.
