Job Summary Plant Operations consists of approximately 1,200 bargained-for and non-bargained for employees, across five diverse departments. This position reports through the Construction Services department.
The Spray Painter will be providing services in University of Michigan facilities across campus and throughout the Health Care System.
A flu shot is required (or a mask worn when working in the Health Care System facilities).
Responsibilities* Repair surface before painting, filling holes, and cracks with putty or patching plaster.
Select, mix, and blend paint to meet color, consistency, and surface composition and durability criteria.
Assemble, operate, maintain, and clean spray-painting equipment.
Spray paint onto interior or exterior surfaces, including walls, machinery, furniture, cabinets, smokestacks, and structural steel work.
Roll or brush paint onto interior or exterior surfaces, such as walls, trim, machinery, furniture, cabinets, smokestacks, and structural steel work.
Finish new furniture or refinish old furniture, including desks, chairs, cabinets and their components, alternating spray application of stain, varnish, lacquer or shellac with a sanding or buffing operation.
Prepare and paint motor vehicles and/or automotive equipment.
Remove wallpaper using a steaming unit.
Prepare surfaces for painting by washing, scraping brushing, sanding, and sealing.
Hang or lay drop cloth to protect against dripping and splashing.
Mask adjacent areas that are not to receive paint.
Erect scaffolding and ladders.
Clean assigned area of work.
Clean and maintain tools and equipment.
Prepare records and service reports documenting materials and time expended.
Maintain and order standard shop supplies.
Order spray/finish material required for work orders.
Coordinate with UM OSEH for hazardous waste storage and removal.
Required Qualifications* Graduation from high school
5 years of experience with furniture stripping in preparation for refinishing operation
5 years of experience in commercial spray booth operation
5 years of experience with the equipment, methods, and materials used in indoor and outdoor spray, brush, and roller paint.
Ability to mix, match, harmonize and contrast colors, wood stains, and finishes.
Ability to use and maintain conventional, HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) and air assisted spray method equipment
Ability to maintain tools and equipment
Knowledge of Google products, Smart Phone technology, tablet technology, and desktop and laptop computers.
Ability to conduct online research
Five years of professional customer service
Ability to make and keep commitments
Ability to read, write, and interpret sketches and diagrams.
Exceptional verbal communication skills
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position including with or without reasonable accommodations
Ability to wear a respirator or fresh air hood
Desired Qualifications* Ten years of experience in a commercial spray facility
Ten years of experience with all types of paints, stains, varnish, shellac, and lacquer
Two years of experience working with an automated work order system.
Two years of experience operating a business
Willingness to work overtime if required
Work Schedule Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:15 PM
