Overview

Harris Teeter is a supermarket chain that operates in seven states with over 260 locations. Ranked #34 in the 2012 "Top 75 Retailers & Wholesalers" by Supermarket News, it has become a household name since its creation during the Great Depression. Originally, this business venture was composed of two separate corporations, Harris Drugs and Teeters Food Mart, but soon merged to create a store that was unlike any other at the time.

Family has always been front and center at Harris Teeter and the company’s desire to build a culture of inclusion is one of the reasons that employees choose to work there. The organization places a strong emphasis on diversity and personal relationships both among staff members and within each respective community.

In 2013, Harris Teeter was acquired by Kroger for $2.4 billion yet allowed each store to operate under the original name. Most store locations have been able to stay on the cutting edge of competition by offering online orders and pickup services as well as providing exceptional customer service and low prices.

Date Founded

In 1936, William Thomas Harris opened Harris Super Market and was the first store in North Carolina to allow customers to select groceries off the shelves themselves rather than handing a list to a clerk.

Three years later, Willis L. Teeter began his own grocery venture and founded Teeters Food Mart.

Between the two men, a total of 15 stores were operational in the area, and after meeting at an NC Food Dealers Association event, both Harris and Teeter decided to join forces. Their merger was finalized in February 1960.

Company Mission Statement

Harris Teeter places a very strong emphasis on their leadership both at the store level and also within their community. Each location is active in supporting United Way and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Rod Antolock, president of Harris Teeter, describes their mission in this way:

"Diversity and inclusion are naturally woven throughout the framework of Harris Teeter, starting with our own associates and the customers that we serve. Respecting our associates as individuals by valuing their differences and similarities is an integral part of our business strategy and serves to strengthen our company. On every level of our organization, we will build a qualified workforce that reflects the diversity of our communities. In doing so, we recognize that creative energies and ideas generated by a diverse group of associates will always exceed those of anyone particular group. We will continue to strengthen our supplier diversity initiative. With these dynamics in place, the merchandising and marketing of Harris Teeter products and services are truly reflective of the diversity of our culture."
