Jack in the Box

Overview and benefits

Jack in the Box is one of the largest fast-food restaurant chains with locations in 21 states plus Guam. The restaurant has focused primarily on revolutionizing the drive-thru window and convenient takeout meals. Only about 15% of its 500 million annual customers eat in, the rest are taking their food to go.

Jack in the Box prides itself on being one of the first restaurants to offer staple fast-food items such as salads and breakfast sandwiches, which are now served in most fast-food restaurants. However, its menu mostly revolves around burgers, including the Jumbo Jack, Sourdough Jack, Buttery Jack and more. The restaurant also offers other items like tacos and chicken.

The restaurant also strives to make its products customizable so that each customer can order them exactly they way they want it. The Jack in the Box slogan says it all: “We don’t make it ‘til you order it.”

Date founded

The first Jack in the Box restaurant was opened in San Diego by Robert O. Peterson in 1951. At the time, Jack in the Box was a division of the San Diego Commissary Co., which later became Foodmaker Co. In 1960, Jack in the Box began opening other locations in California, Arizona and Texas.

Foodmaker Co. was acquired by Ralston Purina Co. in 1968 and the company grew to more than 1,000 locations by 1979. When the company decided to focus its business in the West and Southwest, it closed over 200 restaurants that were located in the East.

In 1985, Foodmaker Co. management bought the company back from Ralston Purina and the company went public. In 1988, it was converted to a privately-owned company before ultimately deciding to go public again in 1992.

Foodmaker Co. launched its first ad campaign featuring Jack as the fictional founder and CEO in 1995, which instantly became a hit; although, he was originally pictured as a clown that sat on top of the restaurants.

Throughout the history of the company, Foodmaker Co. discontinued its investment in its other companies. In 1999, it renamed the company to Jack in the Box, Inc.
