Date founded

In 1921, Lucius Smith Lowe opened the first Lowe’s store (then called Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware) in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. In 1940, the company was passed to his daughter, Ruth, who sold it to her brother, Jim Lowe. In 1943, Jim Lowe took Carl Buchan on as a partner. Buchan got the company on track to focus on building materials for construction after WWII.

The second Lowe’s location was opened in Sparta, North Carolina in 1949. After the two partners disagreed, they decided that Buchan would take control of Lowe’s and Jim Lowe would take control of their other joint ventures. The company grew in the 1950s, and when Buchan passed away in 1961, the company was made public.

Throughout the 1980s, Lowe’s struggled with whether it should transform into a big-box store rather than sticking to its small-town roots. Lowe’s eventually decided that it had to make the changes necessary to thrive in a competitive environment. The company once operated in the United States, Canada and Mexico but ultimately decided to close all of its Mexico locations due to underperformance.
