Spencer Gifts started as a mail order catalog out of Easton Pennsylvania in 1947 that specialized in selling novelty items. The first store opened in the Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey in 1963, which is still open today.
In 1967, after opening about 450 stores, Spencer Gifts merged with MCA. The company closed its mail order catalog in 1990 to focus on its stores. The company’s first Canada location opened in 1997. Spencer’s acquired Spirit Halloween in 1999, which makes up about half of its annual revenue.
Spencer Gifts was rebranded in 2003 to become just Spencer’s, and it began redesigning its stores to match the new brand in 2004. ACON Investments has owned the brand since 2007.
