Glen Bell recognized the popularity of Mexican food as a small hot dog stand owner and operator in San Bernardino, California. By 1952, Bell had a new stand named Taco-Tia with only tacos. His empire grew steadily as he bought and sold El Taco restaurants throughout Southern California. Bell opened the first Taco Bell in Downey, California in 1962. Rapid expansion enabled the brand to reach 100 locations by 1967. PepsiCo purchased Taco Bell in 1978; today, it is operated by the subsidiary Yum! Brands.
