Date founded

John Wegman opened the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company in 1916, where he delivered produce to local homes. His brother Walter joined him a year later, and they expanded the business in 1921 by buying Seel Grocery Co. and adding general groceries to the store’s offerings. Throughout the years, the stores presented many new innovations to its local communities. For example, in 1932, Wegmans had the first refrigerated display windows and produce sprayers in Rochester.

During the 1950s, the company made many changes to its employee benefits, such as raising salaries and introducing a profit-sharing plan. Wegmans started producing and selling its Wegmans Brand foods in 1979 with the slogan, “Food You Feel Good About.”

Beginning in the 1970s, the company began getting more involved with its surrounding communities by donating to charities and nonprofit organizations as well as creating its own charitable organizations. In 1987, Fortune magazine named Wegmans best in customer service among food retailers. Wegmans first was named in Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in 1997. Wegmans has gone on to win many awards and receive praise for its policies and procedures.
