UnitedHealth Group is now looking for a seasoned Director of Underwriting to join our dynamic team in Las Vegas, NV. Things are exciting at UHG as we are experiencing unprecedented growth, and looking for someone with “the right stuff” for our team. This position is highly visible within UHC's Sierra Health Services Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for the appropriate pricing for all Commercial (E&I) Business while supervising a team of 12-15 Underwriters.

 

The Director of Underwriting will lead the underwriting initiatives to ensure that cases are appropriately assessed from a risk perspective and are appropriately priced for risk level. This individual will ensure that the business meets its strategic profit and growth objectives and is managed within the risk tolerance guidelines. This individual will be accountable for overseeing the production of the rating and underwriting services for new business and/or existing accounts. They will participate with senior management in the development and implementation of underwriting policy, marketing and business strategy.

 

Key job responsibilities include:

 

-       Interact heavily with Actuarial, Sales, Product Management, Group Services and Legal teams. 

-       Coordinate operational product implementation and maintenance across all departments.

-       Maintain policy form libraries for all products.

-       Develop and maintain multiple rating and business rule applications that support pricing and generation of ID cards and post enrollment materials.

-       Manage a competent and motivated staff of underwriters.

-       Train and develop a team of underwriters.

-       Monitor performance and provide overall guidance.

Requirements

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:

 

-       Bachelor's degree in math, finance, or related area; advanced degree preferred.

-       5+ years of experience with healthcare underwriting for any variety of products: PPO, HMO, self-funded, group or individual.

-       5+ years of management experience, directly supervising a staff of 4 or more.

-       Experience managing multiple projects/tasks. Proven history of successful results in managing issues and driving strategic program initiatives.

-       Experience working as a Subject Matter Expert in a large, highly-matrixed organization, working with various business segment and/or stakeholders.

-       Proven ability to think strategically and to translate strategic directives into tactical initiatives.

-       Must be organized, detail oriented and able to translate big picture ideas into client objectives.

-       Objective, collaborative approach. Ability to adapt in a dynamic and high-growth environment.

-       Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

-       Superior analytical, organizational and problem solving skills.

-       An intermediate or higher level of proficiency with MSWord, Excel and PowerPoint.

-       Experience with Stepwise and Siebel software strongly preferred.

-       Must have strong negotiation and persuasion skills.
