Materials Buyer
Job Summary
Makes material purchases on behalf of the organization for manufacturing or general supply purposes. All purchases are sought to be best price for appropriate quality. Many purchases are made according to lean manufacturing standards and scheduled for “just-in-time” delivery. Balance between cost, inventory, and quality must always be ensured. Maintain appropriate purchasing records, including but not limited to purchase orders, invoices, delivery documentation, and inventory. Coordinate material delivery to coincide with production schedules. Reports to Materials Manager .
Educational Qualifications
Associate’s degree or high school diploma with _____years experience in similar capacity.
Physical Demands
Frequent standing, walking, talking, and hearing with extended periods of sitting. Continuous use of hands to handle, feel and reach with hands and arms. May climb or balance. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Visual and mental acuity required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed and required.
- Prepare purchase orders or bid requests.
- Review orders to determine product types and quantities required to meet demand.
- Coordinate activities involved with procuring goods and services.
- Confers with vendors to obtain product or service information, such as price, availability, and delivery schedule.
- Approve invoices for payment.
- Maintain manual or computerized procurement records such as items or services purchased, costs, delivery, product quality or performance, and inventories.
- Maintain records of business transactions and product inventories, reporting data as necessary.
Other Qualifications or Requirements:
- Ability to negotiate with suppliers.
- Ability to anticipate and resolve problems.
- Ability to develop and maintain working relationships.
- Communicate clearly (oral and written) with customers, employees, and executive management.
Work Environment
Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the environment is moderate. Occasional exposure to very hot or cold temperatures outside of a climate controlled environment.
Computer Skills
Word processing, spreadsheets, accounting software, electronic mail, order processing, inventory, manufacturing software, database software.
Technical Competencies
Knowledge of plant’s manufacturing equipment, systems and processes. Administrative knowledge of budgeting, data collection and capital equipment analysis.
Special Knowledge or Skills
Excellent interpersonal and management skills. Ability to think strategically and use good judgment and decision making skills to solve problems. Excellent written and oral communication and negotiation skills. Ability to coach, delegate, motivate a team and influence others for a desired outcome within the targeted timeframe. Knowledge of inventory/material and job cost control, on time delivery systems and accounting. Personal and professional integrity and credibility.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Not a supervisory role, but ownership of work performed and responsibility for own actins are expected. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable federal and state laws. Responsibilities may include assisting in training employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
