We have an excellent opportunity available in our Minnetonka office to become our newest Underwriting Consultant. As a member of our Key Accounts team, the Underwriting Consultant will help to achieve profit and growth while enjoying the chance to work with a large important block of business as well as the kind of benefits and growth expected from an industry leading Fortune 14 company.

 

The Underwriting Consultant will analyze fully insured group health benefit plan characteristics and assess risks for employer group medical insurance plans. They will utilize established underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies. This Underwriting Consultant will represent and negotiate rates and plan options with sales teams to optimize cost-competitive health benefit plans. They will build and maintain models to assist in the economic analysis of market alternatives.

 

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Completing group RFP's and renewals on a daily basis

  • The incumbent is responsible to achieve profit, growth, service and expense objectives through the financial analysis and management of a complex book of business

  • Ability to make independent decisions, working with underwriting management to meet required deadlines

  • Devises and directly negotiates complex financial arrangements with internal sales constituents

  • Advises internal sales and occasionally external constituents (with modest supervision) on benefit design, legislative requirements, financial arrangements and industry trend

  • Serve as mentor to other Underwriters

  • Recommend improvements in underwriting and marketing strategies

  • Assist in planning and leading underwriting projects as assigned

  • Develop positive working relationships with peers, and sales and other departments

Requirements

Required Qualifications:


  • BA/BS degree in Math, Finance, Business, or related area or equivalent underwriting experience

  • 4+ years underwriting experience; fully insured group health underwriting experience and a strong grasp of underwriting pricing concepts (preferably in the 100-5,000 employer group field)

  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word

  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, team environment, but able to work independently

  • Strong organizational and negotiation skills

  • Must have strong financial analysis, problem solving and critical decision making skills

  • Exhibits effective personal communication skills in the areas of listening, speaking and writing

  • Handles difficult situations diplomatically

  • Generates creative and innovative solutions to problems

  • Exhibits sound business judgment

  • Demonstrates a high level of commitment to customer/client service; anticipates, understands and strives to meet customer/client needs; seeks feedback from customers

  • Ability to prioritize and respond quickly and effectively to numerous and simultaneous demand
