Phlebotomist:

Obtains blood and other specimens for laboratory testing from outpatients and inpatients of all ages according to physicians' orders and established procedures. Delivers supplies and reports to physicians' offices and nursing stations. Labels specimens and transports them to the Laboratory for analysis.

Accountable for adhering to ORMC mission including meeting behavioral expectations (compassion, caring and confidentiality), providing excellence in health care delivery, supporting dignity of all persons (empowerment) and responsible stewardship of resources.

Receives orders either by telephone or requisition from the nursing units or physicians; enters requests on computer by patient number, operator and tests ordered and travels to patient site, as necessary, to obtain specimens.

Prepares skin site and performs venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians' orders.

Instructs patients in specimen collection methods and procedures (i.e., urinalysis and bacteriology), and obtains specimens for culture and analysis.

Labels and records specimens obtained, transport them to the laboratory and distribute to appropriate laboratory area for analysis.

Follows guidelines that maintain safety for oneself, patients, visitors and co-workers and if classified as a category I or II employee under OSHA regulations, adheres to OSHA standards by wearing personal protective equipment, following universal precautions and being knowledgeable about blood borne pathogens.

Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications:

Training program and/or nationally recognized certification as a Phlebotomy Technician preferred.

1 year phlebotomy experience preferred.

Hospital experience preferred.

Previous health care experience required laboratory experience and knowledge of aseptic methods and basic medical terminology preferred.

Good communication skills.

Analytical skills necessary to select best site for obtaining blood and bacteriological specimens based on physicians' orders.

Does not pose a direct threat or risk to the safety and health of themselves and other employees.
