Sitter Job Description
Patient Observation:
a) Keeps patient within view at all times.
b) Never leaves patient unattended.
c) Uses the call light system to summon staff for assistance or needed equipment/supplies.
d) Accompanies and stays with the patient when transported off the unit for any diagnostic tests or procedures.
e) Remains in patient room at all times even with visitors and does not leave without relief.
f) Documents observations on flow sheet as instructed and indicated.
Patient Safety:
a) Keeps patient room door open/partially open at all times.
b) Keeps bathroom door open at all times.
c) Removes sharp/dangerous items out of room.
d) Screens ail items brought in by visitors.
e) Knows patient's ordered activity level.
f) Assists patients in/out of bed and to/from bathroom as ordered activity level permits.
g) Avoid wearing items around neck. (ID badge, stethoscopes, necklaces, etc.)
h) Ensures additional staff available while performing 1:1 patient care in 2:1 setting.
Patient Privacy:
a) Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
b) Refrains from discussing patient information with anyone other than the Physician or direct care providers.
c) Respects the patient's rights to dignity while providing care, with condemn for safety as a priority.
Communication:
a) Listens and acknowledges patient's complaints and feelings.
b) Conveys attitudes of compassion, empathy and understanding.
c) Refrains from conversations with patients regarding his/her medical condition or plan of care and refers. All clinical question to RN.
d) Seeks guidance and direction when appropriate.
e) Informs RN if patient express.es desire to harm self/others or wants to leave the hospital.
f) Provides report to relief patient sitter and to RN prior to leaving at shift end.
g) Follows direction of the RN within sitter scope of practice and competency.
Conduct:
a) Provides patient care activities such as ambulating, etc. .. (within scope of practice and competency).
b) Refrains from making personal" phone calls, eating food in room, sleeping; or reading personal material.
c) Allows patient control of television.
d) Refrains from use of personal electronics (iPod, iPad, Game boy, etc.)
e) Refrains from using computer.
f) Remains with assigned patient(s) until relief patient sitter has arrived and is in the patient room.*
g) Adheres to dress code for patient care providers.
h) Completes required flow sheet documentation-.
i) Performs ali other duties as assigned.
High school diploma
Nursing Assistant training preferred
AHA BLS card
