SUMMARY
This position is responsible for anchoring weekend sports, back-up anchor for “Sports Night”, field anchoring sports, reporting, writing, producing shooting and editing sports stories, breaking sports news or sports news programs as directed by the Sports Director, assignment desk, Executive Producers, or News Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Using creativity and imagination, and exercising strong professional news judgment, gathers information, conducts interviews, shoots video, produces, anchors and reports assigned sports stories and events on a daily basis. Will often work alone to report, shoot and edit sports stories, operating field cameras, gear and video editing system.
Develop original ideas for sports stories and features, prioritizing coverage of the college and high school athletics.
Responsible for contributing content for nightly show “Sports Night.”
Stories should be factually accurate, fair and balanced in content, and written in a clear and concise manner.
Obtains sports information by developing sources and using research and interviewing skills. Conducts live or taped on-camera interviews.
Assists Sports Director in planning sports coverage.
Deals professionally with public, both official and non-official, in gathering and reporting sports stories.
Maintains thorough knowledge of sports in cable viewing area and stays in close contact with area coaches and teams.
Maintains a strong familiarity with local and national sports and issues of the day by reading newspapers and monitoring competition to the point that reporter can generally speak to issues credibly during breaking news situations. Maintains extensive knowledge of sports issues and events across Division viewing area.
Creates responsible and engaging social media conversation on various sports and news topics that are in line with the company’s Social Media Policy.
Edits copy written by others and edits video to written copy.
Meets all assigned production deadlines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
College degree in broadcast journalism or related field.
Minimum 2+ years of sports anchor experience in a commercial TV environment is required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and good organizational skills.
Solid news judgment, with knowledge of current local news and newsmakers a plus.
Ability to make quick decisions, multi-task, and work effectively and efficiently under pressure and deadlines.
Must be able to use and have knowledge of common television newsroom computer systems and software, with ability to learn new software systems
Experience or functional knowledge of news video editing systems, with knowledge of non-linear and or desktop-based editing systems a plus.
Must have valid driver ' s license with clean driving record.
