JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides high acuity of medical care to patients under the direction of a supervising cardiac surgeon in the field of Cardiac Surgery. Examines, evaluates, and treats patients with all American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) levels of medical acuity, and that require all degrees of invasive and interventional procedures. Performs cross functional responsibilities, often simultaneously, in the operating room, intensive care unit (ICU), step-down unit, and outpatient areas. Manages full rotation of care where providers perform pre-op, intra-op, post-op care/procedures. Functions at the highest level of autonomy, within the limits of mid level licensure. Teaches and mentors junior physician assistants in cardiac surgical care. Duties include, but are not limited to, central line placement, Swan-Ganz insertion, chest tube insertion, intra aortic balloon insertion and removal, intraoperative conduit harvest, chest closure, and first and second assisting in all types of cardiac surgical procedures. Educates patients and families on risks, outcomes, and health maintenance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Level Degree is required (MSN, MS, MMSc, or equivalent)

AHA BLS & ACLS provider certification required.

State of Georgia Professional Licensure required.

Required completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner (ACNP preferred) or Physician Assistant (PA) program, with national certification as an APP from a national certifying board.

Must demonstrate and maintain credentialing and licensing requirements of Emory University School of Medicine & Grady Memorial Hospital

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS: POSITION SUMMARY

The Advanced Practice Provider in Cardiothoracic Surgery works directly with the team of surgeons & other CTS APPs, primarily in the outpatient clinic setting. The provider is generally responsible for providing age-appropriate, culturally and ethically sensitive care, maintaining a safe environment, educating patients and their families about healthy practices and treatment modalities, assuring continuity of care, coordinating care across settings and among caregivers, managing information, communicating effectively, and utilizing technology.

The APP performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct patient care services. The CT Surgery APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

The Cardiothoracic Surgery APP in the outpatient setting is familiar with the etiology, risk factors, signs / symptoms, pathophysiology, and peri-operative management of common Adult Cardiothoracic Surgical Diseases & employs this knowledge to assure continuity of patient care. This includes but is not limited to:

- Pre-operative outpatient screening and clinic scheduling

- Receiving and tracking outpatient consultations

- Assessing outpatient consultations for surgical intervention

- Coordinating outpatient work up and clinic visits

- Regular communication with outpatients to guide navigation through clinical work-up

- Peri-operative patient & patient family education to include wound care, medication management

- Discharge teaching for inpatients transitioning to outpatient / subacute setting

- Writing individualized, age-appropriate plans of care

- Accurate & timely medical record documentation

- Attendance at multi-disciplinary conferences such as Aerodigestive Tumor Board

- Performing minor clinic-based surgical and diagnostic procedures, including minor wound care, staple, & suture removal

- Coordinating & communicating patient care plans with Surgeon, fellow CTS APPs, & referring services

HOURS:

Full time, 40 hours per week. No call or weekends

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a nationally accredited Physician Assistant program. Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of Georgia. Demonstrated highest level of proficiency, certified by the Chief Physician Assistant, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and the Chair of Surgery.
