The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will be directed by the Auto Pool Manager I and Chief of Plant Operations I in the Plant Operations Department. The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

* Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials associated with the garage and transportation

* Orders and acquires parts for equipment or vehicles from numerous sources

* Has the physical agility to climb and work off ladders, lift and carry a minimum of seventy (70) pounds, work unassisted if necessary, and work standing throughout the workday

* Works closely with the State Inspector to assure compliance with Fleet Administration Rules and Regulations

* Services and repairs pool vehicles, vans, pickups, and sedans

* Performs overall safety check, service of all fluids and filters, engine tune-up, transmission service, and brake system service

* Police and Fire vehicles, and their equipment, have priority over all other equipment and vehicles

* Specialized technical skills are needed to repair the D/C-powered electric carts to assure safe operation inside and outside the Facility

* The Heavy Equipment Mechanic maintains a preventive maintenance chart on vehicles and equipment

* Assures Smog Tests on vehicles are completed as required

* Understands and knows the location of Material Safety Data Sheets and protective gear in regard to any hazardous material he may be required to use

* The Heavy Equipment Mechanic shall perceive unsafe vehicles and equipment and/or unsafe operation of vehicles or equipment as life and safety hazards and should immediately take the appropriate action to resolve the condition

* Reads, understands, and conforms to all Hospital Administrative Directives

* Maintains daily tool control procedures and instructs all concerned in proper tool control

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid California Class 3 driver license. (Applicants who do not possess the license will be allowed to compete in the examination, but the license must be obtained prior to appointment.) and Either I Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a gas and diesel-powered truck mechanic, or a heavy construction equipment mechanic. (Apprentices who are within six months of completing their apprenticeship program may be admitted to the examination, but they must present evidence of completion of a recognized apprenticeship before they may be appointed.)

OR II

Four years of varied mechanical experience on gas and diesel powered trucks or heavy construction equipment. An Associate of Arts Degree in Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Diesel Mechanics, or Heavy Equipment Mechanics or a certificate of completion from an accredited community college or equivalent degree or certificate approved by the California Superintendent of Public Instruction under the provisions of California Education Code Section 94310(b) may be substituted for two years of the required experience. (Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination but must present evidence of completion prior to appointment.)

OR III

Three years performing the duties of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice in the California state service, at least two years of which shall have included experience on gasoline and diesel-powered heavy construction or highway maintenance equipment.

1. Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to the vacancy, or

2. Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250) or

3. Have obtained previous employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

If applicable, you MUST provide copies of your Training and Development Assignment or out-of-class experience (approved and documented in your department's personnel office), or a copy of your unofficial college transcripts.
