Accountability Objectives:
Performs in the role of expert practitioner and educator within a specialized nursing field or practice area; educates and
develops staff to attain essential job competencies; participates in quality improvement and research activities;
consults with clinicians on complex cases by request.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or equivalent) required.
Master's of Science in Nursing, Education or related field preferred.
Licensure / Certification:
Current RN licensure in the State of Michigan.
Certification in specialty area within the first 18 months of hire as applicable.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required if working in Critical Care or Cardiac areas.
Experience:
Three years working experience in specialty area or equivalent.
Special Skill / Aptitudes:
Extensive computer skills/knowledge required.
Excellent organization and prioritization skills. Self-directed.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
Effective leadership and problem solving skills
Knowledge of Adult Learning Principles.
Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of
hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
Duties / Responsibilities:
1 Plans, develops, implements and evaluates clinical educational programming for specialty area; participates
in and/or coordinates educational activities for specialty area and/or across nursing units; presents professional
and educational programs for healthcare providers and community.
2 Demonstrates technical proficiency in providing patient care.
3 Participates in evidence based research activities and/or studies as opportunities arise.
4 Reviews, revises and develops policies and procedures; participates as a key member of the unit/hospital
based Shared Governance committee; assists in the development of protocols and guidelines related to
specialty area.
5 Coordinates, plans, develops, implements and evaluates essential job competency assessment activities.
Oversees competency records in each unit to ensure a minimum of 95% compliance in addition to age-
specific and cultural considerations.
6 Conducts an annual educational needs assessment; identifies content experts and arranges for monthly
inservice education.
7 Establishes orientation programming for each job class; provides preceptor training and developmental
activities.
8 Acts as planner and facilitates CE application for educational offerings.
9 Serves as a resource to community organizations and universities for health education.
10 Consults on complex patient care issues at the request of healthcare staff.
11 Routinely participates in quality improvement initiatives; designs educational programming around
improvement opportunities and makes recommendations for improvements in processes.
12 Maintains current knowledge and incorporates both age specific and cultural considerations in patient care
depending on patient populations served.
13 Evaluates new products and recommends changes in hospital inventory.
Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of St. Joseph Mercy

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations, the Trinity

charge capture policy/practice.
In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and
communication regarding revenue management.
In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned
to the unit. Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed.
In accordance with unit or departmental practice, proficient with the electronic health records for
documentation, assessment, and care management, performing these activities concurrently with provision of
care throughout the shift.
