SUMMARY

The Landscaper/Horticulturist is responsible for all aspects of installation, maintenance, inspection and/or repair of the grounds of property owned and operated by Universal Studios Hollywood and throughout the theme park and other duties assigned within the Landscaping department. Specific duties include, but are not limited to\: irrigation repairs and maintenance, plant identification and proper planting and pruning techniques, along with pest and disease identification, specific water needs and identifying drought stress, chemical application and maintaining plant health and appearance standards to a high level.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES\:

  • Prune and trim trees, shrubs, and hedges with hand-held tools and 2-cycle equipment. Trim and pick flowers, and clean flower beds. Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge and brush trimmers.
  • Remove, install and maintain high visual standard of plant material in beds and containers, in addition to repairing/replacing damage and manual weeding.
  • Mow and edge lawns, using power mowers and edgers. Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls. Fertilizer/weed control application and identify/communicate possible pest/disease presence.
  • Water lawns, trees, and plants, using primarily irrigation systems, plus hoses, or watering cans. Maintain and repair irrigation systems as necessary. Identify drought stress and correct in timely manner.
  • Assist in specimen tree relocation, including ball and burlap operation, jetting in, and staking and guying.
  • Equipment cleaning, care and maintenance.
  • Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures within Technical Services and USH at large.
  • Promote and provide extraordinary guest service for both internal and external guests; answer questions, offer information, and provide assistance in a courteous manner. 
  • Understand and demonstrate the proper use of safety practices and ensure department standards are maintained and safety policies for the Park upheld.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualification:

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS\:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of plants and how to maintain and manage them.
  • Possess knowledge of the principles of nursery management
  • Possess advance knowledge of landscaping principles.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used within the field.
  • Ability & willingness to work a variety of schedules, overtime, weekends and holidays with short notice.
  • Ability and willingness to respond to incidents in locations requiring climbing, fall-protection, and other non-traditional work-environments.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written on a technical level.
  • Must have the ability to motivate employees and work independently and as part of a team.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS\:

  • Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
  • 3-5 years technical and trade experience.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of employees and management, and willingness to give assistance to co-workers.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently under pressure; proactive thinker/self-starter.
