The Time Warner Cable Charlotte location currently seeks an Associate Systems Engineer for our Applications Center of Excellence Department. Below please find a brief description of the essential duties and responsibilities required to function successfully in this position.

Position Summary

The Associate Systems Engineer is responsible for performing tasks associated with the operations and maintenance of systems, applications and equipment used in the provisioning and delivery of Interactive Digital Services. This includes configuring servers, reporting databases, entertainment and information applications, back-office integration systems, and monitoring and management tools. The Associate Systems Engineer also performs tasks supporting operating system performance, database performance and optimization. The Associate Systems Engineer supports reliable, consistent operation of these systems to provide a quality entertainment and information experience for our customers. This position is part of a team performing system upgrades and changes required for day-to-day service operations.


Essential Job Functions:


• Perform system updates based on evaluation and testing and release cycle following the approved Time Warner Cable Change Management Process.

• Provide systems and applications administration tasks impacting proper delivery of services to customers.

• Maintain and utilize scripts and programs to perform critical tasks such as service configuration, system error reporting, backups, utilization rates, and capacity, security checks, etc.

• Document and maintain system configuration data and inventory.

• Specific applications and devices supported and maintained include:

O Scientific Atlanta DNCS, Motorola DAC, Application Servers, Session Resource Manager (SRM), Encryption Servers, RACAS, XOD Server/MAS, TSB, set top box, CableCARD devices.

O Tandberg/Mystro BMS, Tandberg AMS, Tandberg MediaPath Catcher, Storage Array and all associated devices and components

O VOD & XOD content servers and monitoring servers.

• Ability to follow Method of Procedure or other engineering documentation to properly perform critical system updates and changes running on the above devices in a manner consistent with Time Warner Cable’s operational procedures.

• Maintain video source mapping, content encryption, and channel lineups for digital services.

• Maintains Video on Demand and Pay Per View offers, including special event and special interest programming packages.

• Interface with various departments with various technical levels to coordinate service activation and troubleshoot product performance issues, including Billing/IT, Marketing, Corporate, Customer Service, Technical Operations, Engineering/Maintenance, equipment vendors and contractors.

• Updates and maintains manual and computerized logs and records in accordance with Federal, NY State, and Local Government and Time Warner Cable Engineering requirements.

• Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:


• Knowledge of or ability to learn and utilize various networking protocols such as TCP/IP, SNMP, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, SSH, Telnet required

• Knowledge of or ability to learn and manage basic aspects of UNIX operating systems, utilities, tools and applications is required

• Experience operating a Scientific Atlanta DNCS system and Video on Demand systems in an ISA environment is desirable.

• Knowledge of Linux, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft Windows servers and networks, including knowledge of UNIX operating systems is desirable

• Knowledge of database operations, administration and maintenance is desirable.

• Experience with Microsoft Office Software products, including word processing, spreadsheets, Powerpoint and database skills.

• Must possess good attention to detail, be an independent, self-motivated worker and have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining excellent performance and results.

• Excellent communication skills.

• Ability to prioritize, make decisions and work efficiently and effectively under deadlines.

• Ability to be watchful, anticipate and act quickly with good judgment. Ability to think through problems, analyze and break it down into parts to resolve or perform timely escalations to higher tier support resources.

• Must be highly flexible to change work schedules and locations on short notice, including overnight work in and around the region.

• Must be able to participate in 24x7 on-call rotation and do overnight travel as necessary.

• Project assignment and priority setting are dependent upon company goals and objectives.

• This position impacts Customer Service/Call Center, Marketing, Telecommunications, IS and ultimately the customer.

Preferred Qualifications:

Understanding of the concepts and operations of Interative Digital Service such as Video on Demand (VOD) and Switched Digital Video (SDV) systems in a service provider network.

Understanding of system controllers (DNCS & DACs) and conditional access systems.


Education and Experience:
Bachelor ' s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or equivalent training, education and experience.
