The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) seeks a motivated and passionate assistant for its Programs and Development department. Applicants must be interested in learning about veterans’ issues and breaking them down for broad audiences, while working in a fast-paced environment. Flexible hours, ideal for a graduate student!

JWV is the voice of the Jewish serviceperson and friend to all veterans. Seeking to prove that Jews do proudly serve and fight in the US Armed Forces, the Hebrew Union Veterans Association was founded in 1896 and evolved with each war, eventually taking the name we know today – JWV. With over 120 years of service, JWV is the oldest, continuously operating Veteran Service Organization in the country.

JWV continues to live its mission – to preserve the Jewish American military legacy, to protect veteran rights, to spread Americanism, and to promote community – in 250 Posts across the nation and in Israel!

About the Job:

S/he will help support JWV’s Programs and Development departments by assisting with donor list research and curation, facilitating some of JWV’s programs, administrative tasks, content creation for our quarterly newspaper and social media sites, and by helping plan JWV’s largest event of the year, the annual national convention. S/he will report to the Programs/PR/Development Coordinator. The internship is based in Washington, DC, right by Dupont Circle. Numerous restaurants and stores nearby, right in the heart of Washington! Parking lot is available behind the office.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Researching and writing original articles and web content
  • Daily monitoring and reporting of print, social, and web coverage of veterans issues
  • Assisting with drafting, editing, and writing the quarterly newspaper, The Jewish Veteran
  • Generating donor acknowledgements and helping cultivate relationships with donors
  • Help facilitate the planning of the JWV annual convention, which includes data management, working closely with members, and coordinating with the hotel and other venues
  • Work with members to further develop JWV programs such as the JRTOC award program, the Support Our Soldiers care package program, and the National Youth Achievement Award program; act as liaison within the office for these programs
  • Coordinate with military academies and JRTOC high school programs
  • Administrative tasks such as filing and preparing mailings, phone calls, and responding to emails
  • Work with the Programs/PR Coordinator to further develop JWV’s programs and website platform, and best practice strategies
  • Alerting the Programs/PR Coordinator to current veterans’ affairs issues in the news
  • Occasional participation in fundraising activities in collaboration with development staff.
  • Track metrics for the Programs/PR/Development departments to help identify best practices
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor's degree and related experience.
  • Working toward or completed a degree or higher in journalism, communications, nonprofit development, or similar
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to craft content on a variety of platforms; Ability to draft well-written correspondence and proofread documents.
  • Strong verbal, social media, and web research skills
  • Self-motivated, dependable and detail-oriented multi-tasker
  • Superb organizational skills
  • Able to work independently and proactively
  • The ideal intern is a highly organized individual with superb communication and writing skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office programs, including Excel and Word.

  • Aptitude for and experience with development database software or other data management tool.
  • Willingness to learn
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills, strong attention to detail, interpersonal skills, a positive outlook, good judgment and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.
  • A sense of humor and collaborative spirit.
  • Familiarity with the Jewish community helpful but not required.
