Responsibilities:

Responsibilities

Courteously greets patients entering department or work area. Determines patient's needs and processes them accordingly to where or what department they are going to. i.e. Diagnostic Imaging, Cardiac Rehab, Surgery Registration, Lab, Emergency Department, etc.

Enters patient demographic information and insurance into the health systems data base ensuring the accuracy of the information. Assembles patient data completely. Copies paperwork and distributes copies to the proper areas for correct care and billing. Copies insurance cards for hospital business office and other ancillary departments. Enters patient orders for test(s) or procedures from written physician orders on Radiology and Lab walk-in patients.

Explains HIPPA, EMTALA and ABN and why they are required for compliance. Explains multiple consents to the patient.

Shares acquired knowledge and expertise willingly with other co-workers.

Establishes and maintains effective relationships with medical staff, other health system departments, clinical departments and co-workers.

Works assigned workqueues during downtimes.

Collects co-payment/deductible from the patient, gives patient a receipt. If patient is unable to pay at time of service, gives patient the Informational Handout for payment options.

Limits phone calls and visits to break and lunch times. Adjusts personal schedule to accommodate workload when necessary.

Supports management decisions and discusses complaints or problems with supervisor in timely manner.

Strives to improve patient satisfaction by following the Mercy Standards.

Qualifications:

Experience and Education Requirements:

1-3 years clerical experience preferred. Experience with medical terminology and insurance plans preferred. High School diploma required some college helpful.

Minimum skills, knowledge and ability requirements:

* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, excellent telephone etiquette required.

* Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with patients, physicians, clinical and non-clinical hospital staff and insurance companies.

* Strong organizational skills; attention to detail

* Ability to work under stress, meet deadlines and perform all daily assignments with a high level of accuracy.

* Knowledgeable and experienced with various computers systems; Ability to use a 10-key calculator and computer keyboard.
