Responsibilities:

Responsibilities

Develops and maintains age specific patient care standards.

Identifies patient care standards specific to assigned area and age groups served. Demonstrates knowledge of the changes associated with specific age groups and the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patients needs.

Monitors compliance to patient care standards through observations, communication and quality monitoring activities.

Collaborates in the development of Performance Improvement teams and indicators.

Reviews and revises patient care standards and quality monitors annually.

Interprets TJC, Health Department and/or other review organizations standards for staff.

Integrates TJC, Health Department and other review organization standards into unit specific standards of care.

Incorporates patient care standards into Nursing Division and unit specific policies and procedures. Demonstrates the ability to provide and monitor care based on the physical, psycho/social, cultural, safety and other age related factors.

Utilizes the Nursing Process.

Assesses compliance to age related patient care standards through observation and communication during daily rounds.

Assesses patient care on all shifts by observation and communication (the 3-11 and 11-7 shifts at least quarterly).

Assesses the provision of patient centered support services by unlicensed workers.

Prescribes resolution of problems in patient care in a timely manner.

Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care delivery in meeting patients needs, and takes action to improve care.

Coordinates the development of a unit specific care delivery model.

Evaluates the performance of unlicensed care givers.

Works collaboratively with other nursing leaders to identify opportunities to improve care.

Communicates Effectively.

Provides concise effective and accurate verbal and written communications regarding hospital and unit operations. Communicates with admitting regarding patient assignments.

Ensures appropriate handoff communication occurs which includes face to face bedside report.

Meets regularly with Clinical Supervisors and reports Process Improvement and Quality Monitoring results. Seeks feed back on performance improvements efforts. Utilizes quality monitoring data to improve performance and engages staff in action and evaluation processes.

Meets with staff at general staff meeting at least quarterly for information exchange and performance improvement reports.

Meets withExecutive Director regularly to discuss unit activities and opportunities to improve patient care.

Provides written reports as requested. Demonstrates expert knowledge of computer systems.

Demonstrates support for Administrative decisions.

Identifies and implements mechanisms to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of care.

Manages Financial Resources.

Assists with preparation and administration of the annual operating and capital equipment budgets.

Demonstrates knowledge of unit specific history and developing trends in budget preparation.

Provides budget for all proposed new positions or services. Documents justification.

Monitors compliance to budget through labor management and supply expenditure and assists with monthly variance reports.

Coordinates the utilization of manhours, capital expenditures and supplies within budget restrictions annually.

Monitors unit chage entry.

Manages Utilization of Equipment and Supplies.

Informs staff of equipment and supply budget.

Reviews supply utilization, adjusts supply levels as needed.

Intervenes effectively when staff experiences difficulty in getting needed supplies and/or equipment.

Assures effective equipment maintenance by reporting faulty performance.

Keeps track of unit equipment.

Manages the Environment.

Maintains an attractive, safe and clean environment.

Implements measures to prevent or eliminate risk.

Provides risk manager with documentation of situations which have or could cause harm to patient, staff, visitors or the institution.

Uses MER for reporting incidents and monitors as necessary.

Collaborates with other departments to implement and monitor practices to reduce risk.

Manages Human Resources.

Recruits, interviews, hires staff appropriate for an effective staffing pattern and skill mix.

Develops staffing pattern based on historical patient acuity, budgeted positions and skill mix.

Ensures that staffing guidelines are met and schedules are completed within time parameters.

Supplements core staffing on all submitted schedules.

Assures that co-workers are treated equitably and receive appropriate compensation for all worked hours.

Completes performance evaluations in a timely manner, integrating check list with objective observation to assure competency of staff to practice or provide services in an area of patient care.

Provides guidance and counseling for co-workers experiencing difficulties in work performance; documents according to policy.

Maintains accurate co-worker files which contain documentation of current licensure, certification requirements and mandatory education.

Promotes Personal and Staff Development.

Meets all annual certification requirements; CPR, ACLS, mandatory hospital and nursing training.

Participate actively in nursing councils and encourages co-worker participation and unit representation.

Promotes staff development by working collaboratively with EOD to asess learning needs and coordinate education.

Participates in teams or committees as needed to improve unit performance.

Represents the Nursing Department as appointed by Executive Director or Vice President.

Represents Mercy Health Center at community and hospital functions.

Operationalizes the Mercy Philosophy.

Demonstrate compassion in all interactions.

Demonstrates respect for the dignity of others by using a friendly, hospitable manner.

Provides guidance and direction for others in a humane manner.

Performs other duties as needed.
