EnCompass: Resources for Learning is searching for a long-term Substitute Science teacher to teach Living Environment and Earth Science. The assignment would last until the end of February, 2017 with a possibility of the duration extending longer. The successful candidate will have the ability to link instruction to common core standards and support student understanding of science/language arts content in the classroom. This position will also assist students with the necessary competencies in preparation to take the NYS Regent Examinations.

The Long term Substitute Science Teacher will have the following Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and sustain collaborative relationships with members of school-based teams.
  • Assess learner's strengths/challenges, gaps in skills and knowledge, learning style and performance levels using a variety of methods and data sources. Interpret findings and develop individualized learning plan with Site Coordinator based upon information gathered and outline strategies to facilitate learning.
  • Provide instructional support to students individually and in small groups to build skills in specific academic subjects, executive functions, and social competence. Document services delivered, monitor progress and administer periodic assessments to measure outcomes.
  • Provide ongoing communication to students, parents, teachers, and other professionals involved with the student through meetings, telephone calls, and e-mails.
  • Participate as appropriate with school team meetings to discuss the progress and needs of individual students and to share instructional strategies and tools that foster achievement by students with different learning styles.
  • Become knowledgeable and actively involved in the culture and life of the service site through participation in school activities and special events.
  • In collaboration with school-based teams, develop vehicles to communicate with students' parents and guardians to share student progress and strategies families can apply at home to support their children's learning.
  • Assist in the development of new projects and programs to advance Encompass' mission and goals.
  • Participate in the development and presentation of professional development, parent education and other educational programs.
  • Maintain accurate, thorough and timely records of all services delivered in EnCompass Manager and participate fully in program evaluation procedures to measure outcomes.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings with Site Coordinator and/or Administrator.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the employee's Site Coordinator or Administrator.

 

 

 

The Long term Substitute Science Teacher will have the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Computer skills: Basic Microsoft Office and Word.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills and ability to develop and sustain relationships with children and families from different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Excellent team player with a collaborative approach to service delivery and conflict resolution.
  • High standards of professionalism in all aspects of performance.
  • High degree of flexibility and creativity in developing and delivering services and programs to a broad customer base.
  • Familiarity with current research in learning development, educational practice, and learning differences.
  • Ability to effectively and independently manage time and materials.

 

The Long term Substitute Science Teacher will have the following Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA in Science with a current NYS certification to teach Living Environment and Earth Science, optional.
  • Two years of experience teaching science at the high school level preferred.
  • Formal training and/or experience working with students with learning differences preferred.
  • Commitment to teaching within a strengths-based, learner-focused model to support students who struggle to learn.
