JOB DESCRIPTION: Codes inpatient and outpatient physician/patient encounters directly from the medical record using appropriate diagnosis (ICD-9) and treatment codes (CPT-4) for billing and/or statistical purposes. Reviews medical records for completeness and accuracy of documentation supporting the diagnosis and treatment as recorded by the physician; recommends changes or additions. Monitors medical records to ensure compliance by the attending physician with hospital and third party payer policies and regulations. Educates physicians in medical record standards and proper documentation techniques. Gathers required medical record documentation in response to third party payer audits and requests. Performs related responsibilities as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS-P) Certification
3-5 yrs diagnostic radiology experience
3-5 yrs experience in surgical coding preferably Interventional Radiology
Past experience with a CAC (computer assisted coding) program, preferably 3M or Optum
Experienced in billing system edits, A/R and Rejections follow up
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: CPC, CCS, RHIT or RHIA or other similar coding certification(s) required. Knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 codes. Two years experience with coding of physician services and working knowledge of physician reimbursement is required.
