Overview:

Assists the physician and office staff with selected duties to include clerical processing, patient preparation, scheduling, lab, x-ray and medical records. As directed, performs patient care activities consistent with the established standards of nursing practice. The incumbent in this position shall carry out his or her responsibilities and integrate into his or her work ethic the Mercy Philosophy of caring for the sick and suffering, respect for human life and the dignity of each person, applying Christian values to all crucial human issues in the area over which he or she has responsibility. In communicating with patients, families, visitors and employees, a caring, friendly, personal and professional approach is expected. Performs related duties as assigned. Responsibilities:

Escorts patient to the examination room and prepares patient for examination and treatment. Takes patient history and vital signs. Cleans and stocks examination rooms including laying out special equipment or supplies to be used during a patient visit. Orders and maintains supplies of equipment for treatments, including sterilization of equipment. Assists with lab and x-ray duties. Maintains patient files, records and other information. Assists physician in procedures. Performs administrative duties associated with managed care and referrals. Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments. Sends cards or calls patients for notification of test results (mammograms, lab, hemmocult card, Pap smear, missed appointment) in accordance with physician instructions. Telephones patients to remind them of scheduled visits preceding their appointment and Screens telephone calls, refers to the appropriate area. Performs reception and scheduling duties and other clerical duties. Pulls and files charts. Labels and prepares body fluid and tissue specimens for transport. Performs waived clinical laboratory testing as defined by CLIA. Maintains competency in the waived testing category. Actively participates in laboratory quality improvement. Observes universal precautions consistently, and Wears proper personal protective equipment when appropriate. Wears clothing and Mercy badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance. Meets Mercy's attendance standards. Performs other duties as directed.

* Education: High School Education or GED.

* Knowledge of medical practice, care, examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medical equipment, instruments and safety procedures. Knowledge of medical office procedures.

* Experience: Must have computer experience and good communication skills.

* Certifications: CPR certification within 3 months of hire date.

* Skills in assisting in a variety of treatments, medications, taking vital signs, maintaining records, recording test results and office procedures. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Must be able to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and policies. Must be able to communicate clearly and establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public. Equipment Used: Must be able to operate multi-line phone, fax and computer.

* Medical Assistant Certification (AAMA,AMT, AMCA or NCCT)
