UNITYPOINT TRINITY MEDICAL CENTER

POSITION TITLE:Safety Companion (Comfort Companion)

DEPARTMENT: Clinical Resource Team

FTE: 1.0 (40 hours per week)

Shift: 3pm-11pm

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Assist nursing unit to promote a safe environment for patients at risk of injury to themselves or others in an effort to ensure that medical/nursing interventions can be provided. A sitter is an alternative to the utilization of restraints.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. EDUCATION, TRAINING EXPERIENCE:

1. Must complete Patient Sitter Education Program.

2. Previous healthcare experience preferred.

3. Must be able to read, write, and follow written and oral instruction. Must have interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients/families and staff. Must be able to set priorities and react rationally to situations in patient care settings. Knowledge of medical terminology helpful.

4. Within 1 year of hire, may enroll Trinitys Certified Nurse Assistant program

B. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES SKILLS:

Ability to closely observe patient for extended periods of time. Must be able to read, write, and follow written and oral instruction. Must have interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients/families and staff. Must be able to set priorities and react rationally to situations in patient care settings. Knowledge of medical terminology helpful.

C. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:

CPR Certification required.

JOB DUTIES:

RESPONSIBILITIES/ADMINISTRATIVE/CLINICAL:

A. Assist in keeping the room neat.

B. Stay with patient at all times unless otherwise instructed by nurse.

C. Notify nurse immediately with any concerns about the patient.

D. Provide patient sitter care per education program.

E. Will also function in PCT capacity if meet the PCT requirements.
