We are searching for an Electro-Mechanical Assembler to assist in the relocation and reassembly of a large telescope from the US to Australia. The position will require the review of drawings/procedures, the disassembly/shipping/reassembly of a large telescope, large optic inspection and handling, crane/forklift/manlift use, alignment scope, micrometers and calipers measurements, and extended travel within the U.S. and Australia. This position will be a permanent hire.

* Review drawings/procedures and provide input for program planning.

* Perform work from procedures and drawings

* Interface with customer, sometimes under difficult circumstances and tight schedules

* Attend meetings and work with program team to solve problems.

* Assist team in the setup and execution of in-process and acceptance tests.

* Assist in the disassembly/reassembly of a large telescope.

* Use alignment scopes, levels, micrometers and calipers to measure critical telescope dimensions.

* Work around and above large optics with small hand tools.

* Inspect and clean mirror optical surfaces.

* Inspect electro-mechanical telescope components, evaluate and document condition.

* Repair copper soldered hydraulic systems.

* Work with crane and shipping subcontractors.

* Clean/wipe down hardware, sweep, pickup trash, etc. -- need "no job too small mentality".

* Inventory, label, and pack components for shipment.

* Load/Unload ISO containers/tractor trailers and constrain with straps/chains.

* Troubleshoot and quickly resolve problems.

* Responsible for compliance with applicable safety standards and for safety of operations in work areas.

* Maintain a clean work space environment. Put away tools, organize hardware, etc.

* Recommend methods to improve design and improve process.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

* Minimum Education Required: High school diploma or related precision mechanical assembly training.

* Minimum Experience Required: 8 or more years shop and assembly experience.

* Ability to work with limited supervision and interface with multiple functions.

* Ability to work from drawings, procedures, daily goals, schedules, and verbal instructions

* Skills / Qualities Required:

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

* Must be able to read and understand schematics and drawings

* Experience working in a manufacturing and field environment

* Must be able to work with minimal supervision, and verbal instruction

* Experience disassembling and assembling large optical telescopes and gimbals (preferred).

* Experience handling and working around large optics (preferred).

* Experience cleaning and inspecting large optics (preferred).

* Experience rigging with shackles, straps, and lifting beams.

* Certified or able to get certified to operate forklifts, overhead gantry cranes and manlifts.

* Knowledgeable in large boom crane command signals

* Willing to actively participate in team safety meetings and adhere to safety procedures and protocols.

* Familiarity with workplace safety procedures including: Fall Protection Safety, Confined Spaces, Personal Safety Equipment (PPE), Lock Out / Tag Out Procedures and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) procedures.

* Experience using alignment scopes, micrometers and calipers.

* Ability to solder pipes and repair hydraulic systems.

* Working knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.

* Reliable in the field, and able to keep level head in pressure situations.

* Detail oriented, but able to see the big picture.

* Maintain a high level of quality in completed tasks.

* Drive to complete tasks within cost and schedule constraints.

* Willing to work overtime, when required. Significant overtime is anticipated in the field.

* Environment/Equipment Used:

* The use of safety equipment (PPE) is required in designated areas

* Travel is required both within the U.S. and Australia

* Ability to travel up to 75% of the time

* Requires use of personal tool box at job site (preferred).

* Essential Physical Tasks:

* Sufficient mobility, strength or dexterity in hands and legs to grasp, push, pull, turn or otherwise manipulate tools and mechanisms; lift, hold, maneuver, objects of 50 lbs or more; maintain balance while performing work; and remove parts, systems, tools of 50 lbs or more.

* This job requires close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must have sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses.

* Sufficient hearing to understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid.

* Ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately.

* Ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job.

* The position will require work from 0 to 8,000 feet elevation, temperatures that range from 0 F to 110F, and 0 to 100% humidity.

* There will be significant work at elevated heights utilizing PPE.

* Must be able to climb ladders.

* Must be able to work in confined spaces.
