Job Description:

3M is seeking a Development Technician I for the Advanced Materials Division located in Seattle, WA. At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.

Job Summary:

The Development Technician is responsible for performing assigned functions related to all aspects of research and development, manufacturing and packaging of glass frits and powders while maintaining strict adherence to safety rules, environmental controls, development operations and cleaning procedures. The Development Technician has the authority to interrupt processes or activities based upon safety, quality, or productivity concerns pending technical supervisor or other development management consult and instruction. The Development Technicians are authorized to issue maintenance requests for supervisor authorization.

Primary Responsibilities included but are not limited to the following:

* Work safely and effectively in a heavy industrial environment

* Routine use of overhead cranes, forklifts; perform repetitive lifting of bagged materials and containers of finished product

* Properly wear and maintain personal protective equipment; learn and follow lockout/tag-out rules, and work safely with hazardous materials

* Heavy focus on ability to read, record, comprehend and follow written instructions including documenting each stage of the process

* Batching -- transport raw materials to batch area listed on batch sheet, follow batch sheet to weigh raw materials in the correct order, transfer materials to blender and screen batch

* High Temperature Furnace Operation -- safely work around high temperature glass furnaces; follow glass melting procedures and instructions, calculate time for the next process step, hand scoop into crucible; be able to detect and respond to problems within the melting process and take appropriate actions to correct problems

* Assist in melting crucible maintenance, facility and equipment cleaning, sample preparation and testing, kiln rebuilding

* Frit packaging-- move frit from quench tank to storage container

* Safe and effective glass pouring; prepare water quench tank or roller quencher, use of hydrogen torch to start glass flow, monitor and tune the glass pouring and fritting process, transfer of the product to the drying system

* Inventorying -- move storage container to inventory storage location and locating specific materials in inventory to be processed in the factory

* Mill loading -- retrieve material from storage location, follow mill set-up sheet, weigh out appropriate mill contents and place in mill and onto jar rolling mill

* Mill sampling -- pull samples from mills and take to laboratory for analysis

* Dry mill emptying -- lift mills off jar rolling mill, open mill, screen out media, empty dry contents into designated container for further processing

* Screening/Packaging -- place glass from designated container into screener, material exiting screener flows to packaging container or temporary container and then apply labels

* Wet mill emptying/screening -- remove wet mill lid, position screener under mill, run glass slurry through screen into pan

* Slurry drying -- move pan with slurry to drying oven on a cart, take samples periodically

* Powder cake pulverizing -- dried glass powder is fed through pulverizer and into receiver

* Powder screening/packaging -- move powder through screener into final packaging container

* Apply appropriate labeling and markings

* Move completed and in-process materials to storage area

* Maintain glass powder inventories, pull samples from inventory, preparing chemical analysis samples and preparing hazardous/non-hazardous glass shipments

* Progressing toward working alone for periods of time with instructions

* Able to multi task as needed to complete daily assignments

* Can perform routine tasks in area without assistance

* Can perform basic troubleshooting and indicate problems and problem solutions to other higher level development technicians

* Responsible for performing development functions at progressively increasing levels of job knowledge, independence, and problem solving, related to all aspects of development volume manufacturing and packaging of glass frits and powders

* Job must be performed with strict adherence to documented environmental controls, safety and development operating and cleaning procedures at all times

* Applies acquired job skills and company policies and procedures to complete assigned tasks

* Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature but recognizes the need for occasional deviation from accepted practice

* Normally follows established procedures on routine work, requires instructions only on new assignments

This position may require:

* Weekend work

* Working overtime

* Working on holidays as needed

* Short notice shift coverage

Basic Qualifications:

* Possess a High School Diploma/GED or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

* One (1) year experience in a manufacturing environment

* Ability to comprehend, execute, and communicate using written and verbal instructions
