Job Description

Job Summary:

The Nursing Shift Supervisor Registered Nurse, supervises daily operations, workflow and resources of assigned area.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Determines, coordinates and supervises daily staffing assignments and staffing levels.
  • Provides leadership, orientation, training, coaching, and mentoring to departmental clinicians.
  • Assists with performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Coordinates patient care with other members of the healthcare team to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.
  • Assists with addressing issues related to educational initiatives, evidence based care, conflict resolution, cost containment issues, implementation of new services/systems, and performance measures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to be "on-call."
  • Provide support and coaching for staff during shift regarding behavioral and clinical expectations.
  • Addresses concerns of staff, patients, and physicians for the shift.
  • Coordinates the care on assigned shift.
  • Provide multidisciplinary rounding support including but not limited to direct report rounding, patients, team, physician, Foley, CareBoard, etc.
  • Assists staff in narcotics tracking, supply usage, equipment issues, correct completion of paperwork and compliance.
  • Ensures measures, logs and equipment checks are completed, including but not limited to core measure, critical incident, and restraints documentation; crash cart checks and follow up on supply/equipment concerns.
  • Provides follow up on safety concerns and debriefs after serious safety events.


Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications/Registration:

  • Required Credential(s):
    • Certified Basic BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. 
    • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Texas Board of Nursing .  

Education:

  • Diploma 
    • Graduation from an accredited RN Diploma program is (at minimum) required Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) is acceptable to meet the minimum education required Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred For RNs educated outside of the US: Five (5) years of experience as an RN in the US may substitute for the required education NOTE: By January 1, 2017, all associates in this job title must have completed a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher nursing degree and Two (2) years of RN experience is required. Previous non-clinical leadership experience may substitute for up to one year of the required RN experience, at the discretion of the VP Nursing or Regional CNO and HR Director. Previous leadership experience and continuous upward movement in career is preferred. Leadership experience examples may include, not limited to Charge Nurse experience, RN Lead experience, Preceptorship of new nurses, work on interdisciplinary teams or in department work, representing the unit either in the hospital, specialty or network within processes and within service areas, or representative participation in Councils or Congress.
