To prepare and paint/stain interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, structures and fixtures.
Responsibilities*
* Repair surface before painting, filling holes and cracks with putty or patching plaster
* Select, mix and blend paint to meet color, consistency, surface composition and durability criteria.
* Roll, brush and spray paint onto interior and exterior surfaces, including walls, trim, machinery, furniture, cabinets, smokestacks and structural steel
* Finish new furniture or refinish old furniture, including desks, chairs, cabinets and their components, alternately spray applications of stain, varnish, lacquer or shellac with a sanding or buffing operation
* Hang wallpaper
* Remove wallpaper
* Prepare surfaces for painting by washing, scraping, brushing, sanding and sealing
* Cut, fit, install and seal glass in windows and doors (I am not sure this is should be a responsibility)
* Hang or lay drop cloths and tarps to protect against dripping and splashing.
* Clean rollers, brushes and other equipment.
* Erect scaffolding and ladders
* Inspect and direct the work of assistants
* Prepare records and service reports documenting materials utilized and time expended
* Order paint and stain materials and supplies required for the completion of work orders.
Required Qualifications*
* Graduation from high school or equivalent
* 5 years of commercial painting experience in the painting of interior and exterior surfaces of building and structures
* 5 years of professional commercial knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in brush, spray and roller painting
* 5 years of experience with staining and finishing of new wood surfaces and the refinishing of existing wood surfaces
* 5 years of professional customer service
* Ability to mix, match harmonize and contract colors; both paint and stain
* Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding
* Reasonable manual strength and dexterity
* Ability to tape and finish drywall installations, repairs/replacement
* Ability to maintain tools and equipment
* Knowledge of Google products, Smart Phone technology, tablet technology, and computers.
* Ability to conduct online research
* Ability to read, write and interpret sketches and diagrams.
* Exceptional verbal communication skills
* Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
* Ability to wear a respirator or fresh air hood
Desired Qualifications*
* 5 years of experience with installation of wall-covering such as vinyl, fabrics, etc.
* 5 years of commercial estimating experience; time and materials for painting projects
* Experience with special coatings such as Zolotone, Polymix, one part and two part epoxy.
* Experience and certification in the operation of aerial lifts (scissor lift, JLG's etc.)
* 5 years of experience working in hospital and health care facilities
* 5 years of experience working in laboratory facilities
* Knowledge of interim life safety methods
* Exceptional communication skills
* Ability to use and maintain conventional, HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) and air assisted spray equipment
* Willingness to work overtime if required
* Two years of experience operating a business
* Two years of experience working with an automated work order system
Work Schedule
Hours are 7 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday-Friday
Additional Information
This position reports through the AEC-Construction department. The Painter will be providing services in University of Michigan facilities across campus and throughout the Health Care System. A flu shot is required (or a mask worn when working in the Health Care System facilities).
