ANTICIPATED VACANCY

This is an OPS position, paid on an hourly basis with benefits for those working 30 hours or more.

INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT: The Office of the Attorney General, Department of Legal Affairs (OAG) is a pre-eminent, constitutional office, which serves as the chief lawyer to all state agencies and provides legal protections for Floridians against fraud and through the enforcement of the state’s laws. The OAG, is a cabinet agency in the executive branch of Florida state government.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: To be considered for the position all applicants must:

OAG employees are paid biweekly. All state employees are required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to s. 110.113 Florida Statutes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of a training program to become a Legal Assistant, a Paralegal, a Legal Paraprofessional or a Lawyer's or Attorney's Assistant; or a degree or certificate in legal technology, legal administration, legal studies or allied legal services; or graduation from a school of law; or a bachelor's degree with a major in allied legal services; or four years of experience involving paralegal work; or four years of experience in legal secretarial work.

JOB SUMMARY:

THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION EXPECTED TO LAST APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS

Provide legal research and administrative support to the attorneys and investigators, including but not limited to the following duties with minimal supervision: 

  • Perform legal research and gather factual information. 
  • Check case citations and research case history for compliance with general citation rules and Florida-specific formats and to ensure that all relevant case history is included; 
  • Assist in final trial preparations with attorney-supervisors, including file organization, exhibit and document review, redaction, drafting of anticipated motions, responses and all legal documents as needed. 
  • Assist the attorneys in drafting complaints, settlement agreements, final orders, various motions, correspondence and other required documents. 
  • Attend hearings, meetings, and depositions, and assist attorneys by taking notes and obtaining additional information pertinent to the case being heard and providing information on case history as requested. 
  • Provide support at court proceedings with exhibits; distributing case law; coordinating witness arrangements; and other related duties. 
  • Prepare case summaries, deposition summaries, proposed orders, discovery and summons under the supervision of an attorney.  
  • Prepare all case files for litigation, hearing, or trial by electronic filing and/or physical filing in the appropriate Courts. 
  • Provide administrative support by reviewing and indexing of documents and other evidence for trial; make requests to other agencies and entities for supporting documentation and evidence material; prepare statistical information, etc. 
  • Index and organize documents and transcripts obtained during the course of litigation or investigations. 
  • Conduct factual, legal, and other information-gathering projects, as requested. 
  • Review documents. 
  • Create charts/spreadsheets summarizing information gathered from document review or factual and legal research. 
  • Conduct database searches to retrieve documents, data, information, and deposition transcripts obtained during the course of litigation or investigation and any other electronically stored information relevant to the investigation or litigation. 
  • Maintain databases for purpose of efficient document retrieval. 
  • -Complete special projects as directed by the attorneys and investigators. Attend meetings at the attorneys and/or investigators’ request. Assist attorneys with special assignments, which may require extended hours and/or travel outside the worksite. Work with the support staff to maintain investigation and litigation files created by attorneys and investigators. Assist the support staff with answering the main phones and front desk duties as needed. Keep the e-filing/filing procedures checklist current by periodically reviewing and updating the bureau’s procedures based on current local court requirements.  

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Preferred candidate should:

  • have advanced familiarity with litigation support experience in document review and document coding;
  • be familiar with e-discovery processes and procedures;
  • be very familiar with the procedures of complex and multi-state litigation;
  • have trial experience;
  • have customer service experience;
  • have experience with witness and travel coordination;
  • have worked with and be familiar with our local courts of Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties;

Preference will be given to applicants with 5 or more years experience as Paralegal/Legal Assistant.
