Job Summary

The University of Michigan Wolverine Pathways was established to increase the high school graduation rate, college acceptance, and retention rates of academically promising scholars. The Wolverine Pathways teachers assistants will provide exemplary service and expertise in their given subject area of E/LA or math to the communities of Ypsilanti, Southfield, and/or Detroit. They will co-facilitate the program for highly motivated 7th - 12th grade scholars. We are looking for teachers assistants to fill positions for the fall session.

Teachers assistants co-teach pre-developed curriculum to highly motivated students during the seven week fall session. E/LA or math teacher assistant: Mandatory professional development, Saturday, September 22, 2018, Tentative Session Dates: Saturday, October 6, 2018 - Saturday, November 17, 2018.

Wolverine Pathways Teaching Assistant - Compensation: $22/hour. This is a part-time temporary position. The pay rate is competitive, and we require your full commitment to the program session dates for which you areapplying.

Fall tentative session dates below:

  • October 6, 2018 Academic Week 1 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Extended day - YPSI only 2:00 p.m.)
  • October 13, 2018 Academic Week 2 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Extended day - DETROIT only 2:00 p.m.)
  • October 20, 2018 Academic Week 3 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Extended day - SOUTHFIELD only 2:00 p.m.)
  • October 27, 2018 Academic Week 4 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • November 3, 2018 Academic Week 5 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • November 10, 2018 Academic Week 6 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • November 17, 2018 Academic Week 7 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist classroom teacher in explaining information, answering student questions, facilitating small group student learning, and evaluating and grading assignments
  • Maintain documentation of work and scholar progress to be able to present as needed
  • Monitor the quality of the scholar achievement to ensure no fundamental concepts are lost
  • Research a variety of topics (e.g. current practices, policies, education codes, etc.) in order to provide information and recommendations
  • Working under limited supervision following standardized practices and methods; and leading, guiding, and coordinating others
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the program

Required Qualifications*

  • Should have a degree in relevant subject area
  • Be a math, science, or English major
  • Have some experience tutoring or teaching
  • Some experience with group facilitation
  • Desire to be an advocate for the development of students
  • Be highly recommended by at least 2 professional associates
  • Must be able to attend pre-session training day and submit pre-session training assignments and materials
  • Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying tact and courtesy; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills
